Taking a trip to South Dakota, starting in Sioux Falls, at the beginning of June, and I hope to visit cool photographic sites. Then driving west, heading into Montana. Would appreciate any
advice on what to shoot and when. Thanks

You have to hit the Badlands, if you're doing Mt.Rushmore do the needles highway and Sylvan lake. Custer state park is also a great stop. Then in Wyoming hit Devils tower - really awesome at night! Enjoy as it is beautiful country😍

The Sioux Falls Park offers great views of the Falls...be sure to stop there. Sioux Falls is a lovely small city...lots of great trees and a wonderful bike path which also offers great views of the river. The prairies as you head West are like oceans of waving grass...don't discount them. Foothills around Chamberlain are lovely. We recently had a huge sculpture of a Native American woman holding a star quilt (made of glass) installed at the rest stop at Chamberlain just off the I 90. Dale Lamphere is the sculptor, and it is an amazing and impressive sculpture celebrating our history. Of course, the Black Hills offers many beautiful sights. The Iron Mountain road is scenic and impressive...Mt. Rushmore, the needles, Sylvan Lake, Custer State Park. Outside of my hometown of Sturgis, SD, I would also recommend visiting and perhaps climbing Bear Butte which is a very popular and photographic landmark about 5 miles from Sturgis. This mountain is also a religious destination for many Native American cultures. I am a proud lifelong resident of SD so I would be happy to offer any other suggestions.

For an interesting stop going across the prairies, the Corn Palace in Mitchell, then the Pioneer Auto Show at Murdo, SD (it also has some interesting rock displays!).
Head south out of Keystone check out the one lane tunnels that frame Mt. Rushmore, to Custer State Park (beautiful, interesting, and lots of bison). The 'Black Hills Institute' in Hill City is a MUST!!! They have the VERY best dino museum, it is OUTSTANDING!!! (they were the ones who dug up T-Rex 'Sue'). https://www.bhigr.com/
While in the area, there is the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD.
You may want to see the Crazy Horse Memorial - crazyhorsememorial.org‎, just to the north of Hill City. Then head on up the Spearfish canyon. You won't want to miss Mount Moriah Cemetery, in Lead, SD. Some folk of interest buried there...

What makes SD so wonderfully impressive are the small, rural towns. Move off the freeway and take a few side trips and enjoy. The folks are terrific!
