JV Football Action

Here are some shots from a JV football game I shot yesterday. I used my 70-200 f2.8 and my 200-400 f4 (with monopod) on two D4 bodies. The home team (in blue) won, 27-6. It was very shady on the field so it was a challenge getting good light on the players' faces. I mainly shot in aperture priority at 2.8 and 4.0, which maintained shutter speeds at 1000 or faster throughout most of the game. Everything is pretty much SOOC with some minor cropping.

Nice work! In these lighting situations, Lightroom can be of great value.

Great job! I hate shady fields like that.

I have had similar situations, including indoor soccer. Shot D4s with 70-200mm f2.8 and had some problems with depth of field at f2.8 to f4. Couldn't get my grandkids and other players all in focus. Did get good results at f8. You did a great job wth focus at faster aperture.

I can tell you that it does take practice to get good at it, after about 50 years shooting sports of all kinds. I can tell you that I shoot WIDE OPEN as I didn't spend the money on a 400/2.8 to shoot it at F8! A lot of work goes into getting this right which comes from practice, practice and more practice! Best of luck!

Very nice set NikonKnight. Sports photography is not as easy as people think.
