I would also go with a D810, but would prefer the 70~200mm f/2.8G ED VR II ... the 105 f/1.4 has no tripod collar. I don't like to flop the whole tripod head over for verticals.

I use a D800, and it doesn't matter whether the lens has a collar or not - I have a Newton Di400TPR camera rotator bracket for when the camera is on any tripod head.
http://www.newtoncamerabrackets.com/new_page_27.htm - works quite well, and it is made very well.
I like the older 85mm F1.4 AF-D, the 105 and 135 DC lenses. I am curious about the new 105mm 1.4 -

5DSR and 85mm L.
All the detail you could need, exellent skin tones and no issue with cropping if needed.
It all depends on how much I want to enlarge the images. Indeed any modern camera can do very well for portraits.
Any of my Nikon bodies and the 85mm f1.8 D or G should be able to make stunning portraits.

Most definitely, a Nikon D810 !
Sony 7Rm2 with Sony 85mm GM lens.

Canon 5DS or DSr with 50 megapixels

It would be a few full frame and medium format cameras.

Thanks for that, Gene, I’ll have to take a close look at their brackets. A couple of my Leica R lenses have only a stationary tripod bush, and if Newton doesn’t have just what I want I’ll have one custom made.
As for the 105 f/1.4 - it’s definitely an intriguing lens, and not only for portraits. I’d still prefer a tripod collar, though it seems heavy enough to provide good balance hand-held. Geez, I hope these pangs are just signs of a heart attack, and not GAS!!
I'm loving my Nikon D810, I don't think the camera as important as the correct lens. I us a Nikon 24-120mm F4 any where from 80mm to the 120mm at f4 to f5.6. My 27 to 200 f2.8 is also a great lens.
When the term "portrait" is discussed, what printing size is anticipated? I've seen a full portrait size printed from a DSLR at a wedding perhaps 8 years ago, and it was horrendous. Are medium format cameras capable of handling that size or is a 4x6 or 5x7 film camera necessary?
If not based on finances and my existing lens collection, probably the Nikon Df as I just love the look of that D4 sensor, but like a small and light body.
I'm very happy with my current Canon 5D3 and 6D, but honestly for portraits, I'd not pick a DSLR at all, and instead grab my Leica M-E.
