This is the first sign that Canik is willing to take the MILC market seriously. Not that I'm unhappy with my a6300, not at all. But I would have preferred to stay with Nikon or Canon, but neither of them were interested in a real MILC camera.
I'm generally not a fan of the Sony label. My experience with their professional audio and video gear is that it is mediocre. It took me a while to accept that they've done well with cameras. (Though they still missed a couple of things like putting the sdcard in backwards.)
But I've shot Nikon mostly and Canon some for many, many years and would have loved to stay with one or the other.

Did I miss the Canon M4, or was it not offered in the U.S., or is there a model still to be announced? Are the original Canon EOS-M lenses 100% compatible with the M5?

There was an M3 but it wasn't offered in the US that I know of.

Often, camera manufacturers skip a model number to break out of a lack of acceptance of a line. May be the case here, or if there was a 4, sales were so bad, It never got ANY Press. So it has been with Canon and Nikon on "mirrorless".
Olympus and Panasonic hit the market running in 2006 and have a ten year lead on CaNikon.

Are the former Canon EOS-M lenses (for M, M2, M3) fully functional on the newly announced M 5?
