Hi flyfishn,

Don't give up on your D5100. I recently bought one to use the video function only but shot a few stills to check it out. The resulting pictures we much to soft for my taste. After digging through the Menus I found the camera came from the factory with the lowest Sharpening setting possible. After resetting it to +7 the pictures look as good (or better) as those shot with my old D300. You might check on that before giving up on the camera.

Hi flyfishn, br br Don't give up on your D5100. I... (show quote)

Thanks for the tip. That is buried quite a ways down, isn't it? I nudged Sharpness and Contrast up a little. I'll see how that works out. It's interesting that Sharpness is set below center for Normal.

Hi Jerry,

I don't have the camera here at the office but I think it was a sub menu in Shoot Menu>Set Picture Controls or words similar to that. When you select SPC you use the right arrow on the joy stick to navigate to that area. Then you have a bunch of options with the first being Sharpening. Take care & ...

I found it and moved Sharpness and Contrast up a bit.

How do you set the "sharpening" on the D5100?
Never mind. I didn't see the rest of the posts.

I made notes for myself. Menu > Shooting Menu > Set Picture Control > Right-click to make adjustments.

Each Shooting Menu choice - Normal, Vivid, etc - lets you set Sharpness, Contrast, etc., so you can modify all of them if you want. This camera has soo many variables.

Thanks Al_Beatty and Jerry. Found the setting. It really was hidden. Just set sharpening to +9 and will back off as need be.

If the D5100 & D7000 are so similar, what are the chances that the D5100 will have the same focusing issues that some of the original D7000 had?

The D7000 has its own AF sensor, not shared with any other Nikon Body as of yet. The D5100 shares its AF sensor with the D3000, D3100 and D5000. The odds are very unlikely.

Interesting.

Al thanks for all of your help. The decision I was trying to make is should I replace the package lens with better ED lens and is the D7000 a more professional camera for this amateur.
