MakuaMan Loc: Waianae, Hi.

I'am just wondering if any of you watch his show on The Weather Channel and what your opinions are regarding his Photography and the show in general.
I only watch that show on that channel as I don't like that they totally DIS Alaska and Hawai'i,two of the most beautiful states we have. After all they they are part of the U.S. and Hawai'i is probably the best vacation destination in the states and possibly the world.
Mahalo for any input you all may have.
Aloha

I've seen the show, I used some of his ideas for my own shooting, never would have tried to shoot after sunset before.

I've never seen it, but I love the Big Island. I've never been to Oahu, but I'm sure I'd love that, too. It really is like a different world.

I'll do a search on my cable and see if I can find that show.

Beautiful! I'm surprised he was able to get so close to where the lava enters the sea. I took a tour to see that at night. Big mistake. It was hours of driving in a van, and when we got there, we had to walk and walk. The final stage involved walking on broken up lava in the pitch dark. Each person was given a flashlight, but my batteries soon died, so I had to make my way following someone else's beam of light. We couldn't get very close to the lava, so there really wasn't much to see. Waste of time and money.

I know exactally what your talking about although I was alone in a rental car. When I reached the end of the road the park ranger said it was 6 miles in each direction over that broken lava.Iwas 57 with a broken back and still tried to make it as I knew I may never get another chance to see and photograph something so awsome.I made 3 miles before the pain became too much to take knowing I still had 3 miles to get back.On the return after shooting for an hour or so I explained it to many who were trying to do this wearing flip-flops or slippers as they call them over there and saw the majority turn around and thank me for the advice.
Obviously Peter gets permission we mear mortals do not get.He does do some really great work though.

I have watched many of his shows on the weather channel. And he did one show from Hawaii. He was trying to get three shots, one of an active volcano, one of the rain forest and one from the top of mount Mauna Kea, I believe, ended up with a beautiful shot of the night sky.

Cheers,
Tim

I don't care for the show, too much talk about the trek in and very little about technique. Not that many shots are shown, and he uses a lot of post processing which may mislead the viewer somewhat. Also, not too many folks I know use or can afford the large format camera he seems to favor. I much prefer "Travels To The Edge" with Art Wolfe generally found on PBS.

MahaloGrumps'09,
I agree with your statement and was just waiting to see if anyone felt that way also.I would like him to explain about settings and equipment used and why.I believe he uses medium format most of the time but as you mentioned most of us can't afford that so it makes it hard to relate to DSLR's.
Just wondering if you know when the show on PBS is usually on?.I'll start looking for it anyway.

My son lives in Hawaii, loves it and I doubt he'll ever return. Art Wolfe has a web site and the schedule should be listed there. In Richmond he comes on Wednesday evenings at 8:00 (1/2 hour). I would imagine your local PBS could advise when/where. It may even stream, altho I've never tried.

I, too, prefer "Travels to The Edge", but feel neither give a whole lot of technique. I've never seen Lik "use" a filter, and have only seen Wolfe refer to one on one occasion of the 100 episodes I've watched. They don't want to give away their secrets. As far as Peter Lik goes, while watching the show, then seeing the "end result", I beleive his favorite technique is HDR. Not the overblown style, just enough to get the proper exposure. A perfect example of this is the Horseshoe Bend. Don't forget, unlike us, they have all the time in the world to wait for the perfect lighting and situation. Not to mention help. Art Wolfe has professional guides that take him into "game reserves". I witnessed a women on this forum be ridiculed because she (accidently) promoted a shot from a zoo as one from the wild. She never claimed it was from the wild, she just didn't mention it was from a zoo. I think Art Wolfe, having unlimited resources (money, time, guides), and total access to "game reserves", is kinda doing the same thing. However, because he is Art Wolfe and it's not "techniquely" shot in a zoo, he can sell his "wild" images for thousands of dollars.
