My house is stretched "out" thus requiring some communication devices that don't cost a fortune. I need a total of five (5) on the same band for kitchen to workshop to MBR, etc. All within 1,000 feet. Ideas??

FRS--Family radio service. It is similar to a low power Citizen's Band hand held, but has a more limited range & less expensive. Unless your home has metal interior studs, they should be able to handle 1000'--that's one long house or are you including other buildings. I haven't seen them in years but assume they are still made; if not maybe try e-bay or Craigs List.

I tried wireless, plug-in intercoms a few years ago. The house wiring carries the signal. The weak point is that they have to be on the same circuit - using the same circuit breaker. They never really worked out for us.
EDIT: Another idea. Most cordless phones now have an intercom feature. Each phone in the system can call the other. You probably have something like that right now.

Most phones that I've seen limit paging to one location. Often, she will call all stations "where are you?"

I'm not trying to be difficult but my cell never (very rarely) leaves my car. Yes, she always has hers.

My office is in townhouse basement. My son's office is on 3rd floor. Cell phone beats shouting.

No chance to hard wire with Cat5e or Cat6 ? The good stuff can be run inside forced air heating ducts if you don't have a basement or crawl access.

We have come a long way from tomato soup cans and kite string. Couldnt resist and sorry i dont have a good suggestion

But so long as you took care to not let the string touch anything between the cans, they worked fine. When I was a kid, a neighbor and I rigged up a system between our bedrooms that crossed the street and one empty lot, perhaps 150 feet; it worked just fine so long as the wind wasn't blowing too hard.
