Thanks, battery charging now; but rain is due in a couple of hours, so it looks like tomorrow to try everything out.

Thank you, I'm looking forward to posting. It's been a year and a half since by D5100 was stolen. They took my camera, the 28-55 lens and my memory card. Thank goodness I still have the 55-300 mm lens, the camera case, and flash.

You'll love the 18-140mm lens. If it's sharp on my D7000, it'll be spectacular on your D5500.

I am so looking forward to using it. The odd thing is that the lens is heavier than the camera!

Congrats, have fun!

Find a sheltered spot with a good view of the rain and try for some RDIF shots (rain drops in flight).

There's substantially more material in the lens than the camera body and glass is heavier than metal alloys and plastic.
I have a Canon SL1 I call my doggie cam; I use it primarily to take photos of my dogs. I usually have either a Canon EF 24-105 f/4.0L or an EF 85 f/1.2L mounted on it and both lenses are not only much larger than the body, but much heavier. It actually looks fairly silly but it handles real nice.

Enjoy your new camera and take lots of great photos.
