That is exactly what I did. I selected a picture, modified it, saved it with a different name, and closed it. I repeated that process 100 times, and I have 100 very similar images. I renamed the first one "First Picture" and the last on "Picture #100."

I didn't do this to generate controversy, just to show what happened after I made 100 changes and saves. If you use a different procedure, you would probably get different results.

Thanks Jerryc41 for the feedback. Your software did an excellent job of preserving the original image. I know for most of my processing I never like going past three generations of JPEG. It almost aways starts generating artifacts that I don't want, but then again I am sometimes too much of a pixel peeper.

The devil is always in the details. The KIND of modification is what counts.

more fuel for the fire... or not

I'm guessing that most photographers will not go back to work on a photo 9000 times

Good video, degradation easily seen in JPG even at 50 generations. The reality is it starts sooner and may not be visible on an image on the web.

Even 50 separate edit sessions on a single JPG image may even be a stretch, but facts are facts.

Good job with the test and the objections. I see no difference in any of the images in this post. Sorry about losing your dog.

Does it really matter?

Yes..if the changes were subtle then there would not be much changes in the levels so the compression would keep doing a good job.

We've all heard that every time a JPEG is modified and saved, it loses a bit of quality. I did a little experiment. I found a picture of my dogs and changed it and saved it 100 times. Then I took a crop out of the center. The first shot below is the original. The second one has been modified and saved 100 times. When I did the processing and saving, it was always with the previous copy, not with the original. The picture was 1.15 MB, taken a few years ago with a Nikon D90. You can draw your own conclusions.

I have not read all the replies, and I think it probable that someone else has also said what I am going to say - if so - apologies.
Saving a file (over-writing) makes no difference to what you have on the screen. Once you close the screen you lose it. When you open the newly saved file you will see that it was compressed on saving. If you further edit and re-save (over-write) it will be further compressed. Close the screen and you will be left with that further compressed file.
Do that 100 times and you will not recognise what you have left is a picture.

I just don't understand all the comments about the picture. This is a very (1), very (2), very (3) dog of a picture!

Actually, we think our furry "teenagers" are cute too. And sometimes they are just as active as yours in the picture. And it will away be a heartfelt lost when one has to go away. At least you will have the memories.

"even in the winter"? does this mean that you have more time for editing in the winter? or do your winter exposures require more editing?
