I 2nd shot for a photographer yesterday-I shot on her cards, I invoiced her so she could send me payment, she responds back, sorry I only do my invoicing and payments on the 1st and 15th of each month. so now I have to wait 10 days to get paid...I have never had this before.... have you? She never mentioned this before either... I guess I am just annoyed :(

Maggie, does being annoyed get you anything?!
Either she changes her mind, or just relax and wait till the 15th.
Now if on the 15th she gives you a song and dance...., BREAK HER DANCING LEGS!!!

Better than 60 and 90 days out.

Sadly, Sharpie is spot on. Works pretty much that way in any consulting / freelancing business. 30 days is pretty standard, and some companies make it longer. I've just completed a whitepaper and just when I was expecting final signoff the sponsor has resigned, the company is doing a reorg, and changing their strategy. I may eventually get paid, but also may have to completely rewrite the document to do so. It could be months, if at all!

That's strange. I ALWAYS posted receivables as they became due (immediately unless otherwise agreed) and payables on the due date. Now that I'm retired, the company always waits 30 days to pay (except city fees which carry a 100% penalty if not paid in 10 days); it's call "working the float", i.e., waiting as long as possible so your account accrues as much interest as possible before money is withdrawn. Many suppliers find out about this and will put the company on a "COD - Cash Only" basis. If you do a job for someone, get a written promise of a payment date, with a penalty clause. If you're shooting for a wedding photographer who's managed to stay in business for any length of time, be assured the photographer is getting paid a substantial portion of the fee (usually 100% of the pre-print contract) in advance. If this is true, don't be reticent about insisting on payment no later than the end of the day of the shoot. If there is a problem, follow SS's advice (although I suggest patellas as a point of contact).

It isn't normal for the 2nd shooter to not know payment details before the shoot!

That's not at all unusual. I'm retired, so I get paid just once a month. My son gets paid every two weeks. A business can't be writing checks as soon as bills arrive.

I imagine someone else has mentioned this, but I cover payment details before the shoot. Most that I work with pay in 5 - 10 days. Have not been stiffed yet.

Not unusual, Maggie. Ran my business for 35 years and we always paid invoices only on the 15th and 30th of the month. Did you get a deposit/down payment when you agreed to do the job? Always get a down payment in some amount.

Welcome to running a business. At least your going to get paid. Be extremely nice and professional in your dealings. Remember, satisfied customers will tell one person about you, dissatisfied customers will tell at least 10 people about you. One time I had a parent wedding album sit in my studio for 10 months before the couple came to get it, turns out they had lost both their jobs right after the wedding and just did not have the cash to pick the extra album up, they were so happy that I never pestered them about it that I ended up photographing her two brothers weddings.

Maggie you just learned a valuable lesson. I hope it does not cost you bucks. I bet it will not happen to you again.

When I was in business I had a golf cub, knee caps or money. It works every time.

My wife was a purchasing agent at an electronics firm and many of the major companies they sold parts to were late payers 30, 60, and 90 days.

What did the contract say? You did have a contract, right?
