Here are three crops of a green garden spider. The first is full size, the next two are zoomed crops of it.
Is there a general rule of crop proportions? Many times the subject is much smaller than in this picture and zooming in is disappointing as to what would be preferred for the final cropped composition.
Also, as seen in this photo, the subject looses detail in the shot unless it is blown up to 100% size, so zooming, and cropping the zoom, shows detail that the smaller picture cannot, but sacrifices on the composition.
This pic was taken w/ Nikon D-90, VR 105mm F2.8 G, F11, 1/160 s, ISO 400, (White Bal. / Shade, B2,0, Vivid, Active D-lighting / high). Also, I tweaked the Color Bal in Capture NX2 to cool down the picture just a tad.
Has anyone got some game secrets to share on how to get great Macros of insects at close range? I dont think these are very bad pix, but how, or what, can be tried to make these even better?

get closer is all I know..they look pretty good to me
when you crop, be sure not to cut off limbs.... nice.
My main suggestion (for internet display) is to crop as tight as possible, keeping all limbs complete. For printing to standard formats (4x6 or 8x10), crop tightly to those formats at time of printing.
I have also added more discussion via e-mail.
