I would like to buy a new telephoto lens for my D7200. One that would give me more reach than my 300mm. It wouldn't have to be a Nikon lens, but decent quality for under a thousand bucks. Any suggestions?

Tamron 150-600 or Sigma 150-600 - both excellent lens...
Adorama / B&H / Cameta Camera are having a sale putting both Tamron and Sigma < $1000

Both Tamron and Sigma have 150-600mm lenses for about a grand.
Have you considered a teleconverter? 1.4x, 1.7x or 2.0x, if your camera and lens can take one.

I know I should know this but is my 7200 an F mount? What does that mean exactly?

That's the mount Nikon uses for it's cameras and lenses. The lens needs to be F-mount to go on a Nikon camera.

I have a photo friend on another forum who uses a Sigma 150-500mm and just got back from Kenya with some fantastic shots. You might check to see which is sharper, the 150-500 or 150-600. I was impressed with how sharp his shots were.

Reading reviews on Amazon it looks like the Sigma is the better lens, too.

I use a Sigma 150-500. Bought it used for $432.00. I really like it. Took a while to get used to the weight but now I don't notice it so much.

No comparison - the 150-600 is sharper. It is even sharper than the Tamron version.

Consider the Nikkor 200-500mm lens, along with the D7200, an awesome combo.

It is going cost you a few hundred dollars more but I would strongly suggest the new Nikon 200-500 f5.6, the reviews are good, I have owned one now for over 6 months and it is great and on your D7000 it would operate as a 300-750 mm lens and all at a fixed aperture. You will be very pleased with the results of this lens. I actually shoot mine at f6.3 and find it is sharp sharp sharp at that aperture. Many, many reviewers rate this one a bit higher than the Sigma and way out in front of the Tamron, and, it is a NIKON. Nothing more needs to be said.

I have a D7200, and yes, the D7200 is an F-mount. http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-And-Explore/Article/g7jz8sno/nikon-f-mount.html

A lot of you are unfairly comparing the Sigma sport to the Tamron. The sport is a better lens, at twice the price!
