Great Lakes, October 28, 1948, what a cold, dank, miserable winter but with all new shipmates to brighten it up!

I joined in April 1972 and went to boot camp on the north side of NATC Memphis, TN, retired October 1994 as a Chief.
A little over 50 years ago, I crashed my bicycle into one of the emergency bays garage doors at the hospital at Great Lakes because I wasn't strong enough to stop the bike. I ended up with a concussion.
Great Lakes July 1974, as soon as I turned 17.

Dad was also on Guadalcanal, Bouganville and many other hot spots, but he always claimed Peleliu to be the closest thing to hell on earth... Way too many Marines made the ultimate sacrifice there.
That time exposure was a happy surprise mistake. Dad set up a 4x5 Speed Graphic on a tripod and intended to make a relatively short exposure. He pulled the dark slide and opened the shutter. But, just then, the Japanese commenced a vicious air attack and he took cover in a foxhole until the air raid was over. When he went back to the camera, after more than an hour, he thought the film was ruined. He processed it and when he saw the neg, he was amazed. The entire attack was recorded - painted with light. That photo was published in more than 500 newspapers.

Can you publish it here ?
Thank you !!! It is quite an amazing photo !
You're right. Dad was always modest about that shot, but I could tell he was quietly proud of his "mistake." He received a signed letter from Edward Steichen, who served as Chief of Naval Photography during the war, describing the photo as one of the best depicting action in the Pacific theater. Imagine having one of your photos praised by one of the most famous and talented photographers of the 20th century...
Dad carried a 2x3 print of that picture in his wallet until the day he died.
Thanks so much for your interest and keep on shooting.
Bob

Went to Glakes on 30MAR65. Anyone remember camp Moffett and Porter? Joined CG after first hitch in Navy and retired with 22 years. Had a great time! Anybody out there on USS Springfield from '65 - '67?
Served July 24, 1961 to July 23, 1967. Went to Great Lakes, and YES! I remember Moffett & Porter. Hated marching to classes with those dumb looking back packs on your but. I was in Co 314. We got the Drill flag, our sister company got all the rest of them. Ross Field, We were sharp, lol. Went to VT-2 Whiting Field, Milton, Florida for 2 years, then to Norfolk, VA with VP-24. From plain captain, to Crew member. T-28's to P2V-7's. Wished many times that I would have shipped over. Took photos out of the nose(bow) of the Neptune, at surface vessels. Wild!
