If you're coming through eastern PA, the Pocono mountains offer some spectacular landscapes.

In southeastern PA, there is Philadelphia - in particular the historic Independence Hall area. But the 9th Street Market in south Philly is a wonderful place for market-stall photos, as is the Reading Terminal market. There are also lots of "interesting" homeless people for photos, too.

West of Philly, you will find the Main Line area -- along US 30. Tucked in the side roads are some great old mansions. Gladwyne is a good place to look.

Further west on US 30 you will come into Lancaster County, with the Amish farm area. While the Amish are camera-shy, candids are possible with a good long lens.

One thing you could do is take Rte. 1. That has lots of scenic places along the way from north to south.

When in NC, definitely drive from VA on US 17 down the Outer Banks--it's that narrow strip of land off the mainland. Begin your trip at Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Bros first flew their airplane and then continue down to Manteo, home of the 1st English settlement, Ft Raleigh, in the new world in 1584. The colony disappeared during Britain's war with Spain and when the English returned in 1588, the colony was gone; hence the story of The Lost Colony, which is an outdoor play in the summer. From Manteo, continue southward down the banks to Ocracoke, home of one of the few British graveyards in the US still on UK soil. After you ride the ferry back to the mainland, drive down to Wilmington. Plan to spend at least a day in Wilmington touring the old homes that date from the 1700's and the waterfront area. There is also the USS North Carolina battleship memorial there, the most decorated battleship from WWII. Wilmington has some of the best restaurants in NC and is a great walking town in the waterfront area. If you want to detour from the coast and go inward, then definitely drive the Blue Ridge Parkway from Boone to Asheville. The Great Smoky Mtns are renowned for beauty and the diversity of wildlife on the eastern seaboard. In VA, definitely spend 2-3 days at Williamsburg. It has a restored colonial village with great history and restaurants (ever tried peanut soup?). Also in VA, visit Jamestown, home of the 1st permanent English settlement (founded after Roanoke and Manteo). When you get to SC, plan on spending a full day or two in Charleston--one of the most beautiful colonial cities on our east coast. When in Georgia, spend time in Savannah. An amazing city known for its architecture and parks grid. Whew!! I get excited just thinking about those places we have spent time and wish that I could be your tour guide.

If you go to Wellsboro,Pa for the Grand Canyon of Pa, as suggested, downtown Wellaboro is photographers dream. Real gas street lights down the middle of Main Street and many beautiful buildings from the lumbering days of the 1800's. From Wellsoro head north to Watkins Glen, NY for a walk down the glen. Check it out on line, you will not be sorry. Take the ride to the top and walk down, much easier. Just wear the right shoes as you will be walking among water falls and even behind them. Then head south 2 hours to Williamsport, Pa and tour the Little League Baseball complex and museum. The World Series is held here each year with teams from the entire world. Going on right now! Then head south to Gettysburg, Pa and tour the battlefield. If you go to Washington, DC, DON'T miss the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery.

I, too like the Marginal Way and Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, ME. Another favorite is the Hancock Shaker Village on U. S. Route 20 in Hancock, MA, just west of Pittsfield. Good luck and when you're finished share some of your photos.

i agree with all recommendations of sites i have seen - all great. Just so much to see in that broad scope. I like particularly Hudson River Valley and Nova Scotia. If you like gardens, you won't want to miss Longwood Gardens outside Philadelphia. Also Wyeth museum and Chadds Ford is nearby. Another outstanding garden is Brookgreen Gardens between Myrtle Beach and Charleston, SC. This is a sculpture garden with lots of photo ops. As mentioned Savannah is great as is Charleston, but also don't overlook Beaufort SC. This town has over 30 historic houses on National Register, and it is on the coast.
Have a great trip.

Well, it looks like you have more advice than you can absorb, but ...... Here's another tidbit. When you get to the Washington, DC area, head out to the Piedmont region of Virginia--towards the Shenandoah Valley. Before you get to the Shenandoah, there is the northern part of Fauquier county that is just rolling hills that are magnificent. Lots of scenic photography opportunities. Too say nothing of historic areas. Have a good trip. John

If you wind up in southern IL instead of northern, the Garden of the Gods in the Shawnee National Forest is great for landscapes. Indiana....Brown County/Nashville in the fall is a big tourist destination for leaf peepers.

Portsmouth New Hampshire right off I 95 near Maine. Go downtown to the ferry landing. You won't be disappointed. Also great lighthouse shots throughout.

You are biting off a big trip. There are photo ops all along the wy. Boston, Nw York, Philadelphia and washington DC are filled with photo ops of city life and city places. Further south you might wnt to see Charleston, Savannah along with Richmond. Drivingon the blue ridgr Parkway allows for many nature ops. Along the gulf coast are many nice town and beaches. When you hit New Orleans you will have plenty of phto ops of the town and of the devastation in Baton Rouge. Texas is large and you can opt for Houston, Dallas or San Antonio. Each has its own character. I missed the Canadian portion of Nova Scotion. Seeing the Bay of Fundy and it wter show of High and receding tides is awesome. I hope you have a good time.

As you are coning from the west, I assume Minnesota being the first State on your list that you will be traveling I-90 which cuts across the southern part of the State which is all agricultural. If you are not wanting to swing around Chicago, your only other option is to cut by the south shore of Lake Superior and across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (where the Uppers live) where you will find many lake shore ops. By far the more spectacular views are on the North Shore from Duluth northeastward. At this time of year one good photo ops would be at Hawks Ridge which is on the north side of Duluth. This route would take you into Canada and there is a Queens highway around the lake which takes one back into Michigan at the east end of the Upper. But I suspect you will go around the south end of Lake Michigan which means the only scenic Minnesota would be the southeast corner. This area was not subject to glaciation so as you near the Mississippi you find photo ops. Sorry for the length of this and have a great trip.
