This from the RC website:

"The fact is an average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in our humanitarian services and programs. We calculate it by comparing our overall spending on programs to our overall spending on fundraising and management and general.

For example, Red Cross total spending in FY15 was $2,896.8M. Of that, Red Cross spent $302.9M on fundraising and management and general. When you compare the two figures, you see that fundraising and management and general were about 10% of our total spending, which means about 90% was invested in our humanitarian services and programs. If you average that over the past five years, the percentage works out to about 91 cents.

How did we invest the dollars we spent on humanitarian services and programs in FY 2015? Here is the breakdown from our audited financial statements:

a. $1,869.1 million - Collect, test, manufacture, and distribute 7 million units of blood products

b. $356.5 million – Respond to disasters – nearly 66,000 per year

c. $48.7 million – Provide more than 352,000 emergency services to our armed forces and their families

d. $146.6 million - Deliver preparedness, health and safety courses like First Aid and CPR

e. $129.8 million – Fund international relief programs

f. $43.1 million – Fund community services (e.g., food banks, transportation programs)"

Doesn't look to bad to me so why all the dissing, Rogno?

Also, see below from Direct Relief:

"Charity Score
1 Direct Relief 100.00
2 Map International 100.00
3 Samaritan’s Purse 98.23
4 Americares 97.59
5 Catholic Medical Mission Board 97.23
6 The Rotary Foundation 97.17
7 Billy Graham Evangelistic Association 97.17
8 Caring Voice Coalition Inc. 96.66
9 United Nations Foundation 96.18
10 Conservation International 95.90

Mary and I contribute to a variety of charities, I always verify their credentials. Our main giving is to various local veteran groups. In Kent, Ohio, is a residence for homeless male veterans: Freedom House. Ravenna, Ohio has Liberty House for homeless female veterans. Valor Home in Akron, Ohio is the third one on our list. The residents, all veterans, were willing to risk their lives for the protection of freedom for mankind. They have fallen on hard times and now need our help. We contribute food and toiletries that they normally would not get. Lots of good fresh coffee, large jars for peanut butter and jelly. Watermelons, large bags of tortilla chips and jars of salsa. When the local Girl Scouts set-up shop at the entrance to our drug store we a case of cookies and
give them to the vets, they love the cookies and it helps both groups.

I am sure every community has a veteran or two in need who would appreciate a helping hand.

I'll go with audited financial statement any time, any place. The odds are better.

Don't.

Find other ways to help out, look for 'honest churches' that will work toward or local folks you know there.

I am really tired of all these calls for $$$ when very little of what is given out is used somewhere else if at all.

In WWII in the Pacific After several days of killing Japs my father was able to go to the rear with his company he commanded in the Marianas and the Red Cross wanted to charge them for a cup of coffee. Needless to say he has never donated to them nor any of us in the family.

As to the Red Cross (RC). It was organized AFTER the Swiss Croix Rouge (CR). Each country has its own organization. The Middle East countries have the 'Red crescent' (RC). The CR was purely made to rescue military and has since been extended to civilians. The red crosses painted on military hospitals and ambulance come from that.

All RC are regrouped into a single entity the International CR and moved from Switzerland to the US where the political slant started. Note that various national RCs were nationalistic outfits in the early 1900s.

Since each country has its own under different organization the level of corruption differs from being fully rotten to incredibly efficient. The average is in the upper middle, the US being in the lower range, as we are in many other areas that concern the citizen welfare. After all American are 'strong self sufficient individuals that can take care of themselves'. We pay a high price for that mentality both in medical cost and quality of services rendered ~ unless you can pay.

The Red Cross gets a lot of rumors about misuse of funds. Further exploration demolishes these rumors. The Red Cross is a magnificent organization with a high rating with charity-rating agencies. 90.5% of donations goes directly to providing needed services. That is a very high portion compared to many charities. All charities need to spend some money on administration, planning and oversight. The Red Cross is within the top 10% for effectiveness.

I am another will never donate to the Red Cross. When I was in the Army and my grandmother died, i needed authorization to return to my home for the funeral. The Army wanted a letter from the Red Cross but the stupid bureaucrats (many of them are not volunteers and make great salaries) would not help. Fortunately I was able to get assistance from our Senator and returned for the funeral. When I told of all the problems, my Dad and others told similar stories of being let down by the Red Cross during WWII.

They are definitely at the bottom of my list of charities.

I also looked at Charity Navigator. The Red Cross only gets an overall score of 85.01 and their leader is paid $562,364. Tow organizations that Charity Navigator lists with similar activities are Lions Club International with a rating of 94.02 and a salary of $137,313 for their leader and Convoy of hope with a rating of 94.69 and a salary of 214,885 for their leader..

I personally donate to Kiva which helps people with a "hand up" instead of a hand out". Their score is 97.06 and a salary of $193,356 for their leader. If you are interested in learning more about a great organization, check them out at this link: https://www.kiva.org/invitedby/gary79718539.

My experience with the Red Cross in Vietnam and later as a First Sergeant wasn't stellar. We got a lot more from the Salvation Army, and the various services in house services. Not a loan that had to be paid with a payroll deduction, I.e. Red Cross, before they would give you a grant. In Vietnam it was Salvation Army Christmas packages that provided needed and desirables items, free.

My daughter lives in the affected flood area, and was spared, thank God....However, she has passed along stories from friends that were treated poorly by the Red Cross.
