My daughter wants a 24-70 f 2.8 for her Nikon. Has anyone had experience with any of the off brand lenses (Tamron, Sigma, Tokina ) ? She can't afford the real deal.
I hear Tamron's version is pretty sweet. I read a study in which it beat the sigma hands down and was less expensive
Before using digital Nikons, I bought the 24-70 f/2.8 Sigma in preference to Nikon own make. The Nikon lens front element, rotated on zooming/focussing. This made the use of a Polar filter a PITA. Still using the Sigma lens on my Nikon digital cameras, both DX and FX. And to refer to another thread running at the moment...The Sigma lens has a Petal lens-hood.

The 24-120 f4 VR Nikon lens is worth consideration.
I just went through several months with this dilemma. After many considerations, tests, reviews, etc, the Tamron and Tokina were the best for me. The most expensive "real deal" was not necessarily the best lens. I opted for the vibration reduction model and received my Tamron last week from B&H and along with a 10% store credit as well. The Tokina was my first preference, but I believe personally that I will do better with a vibration reduction model with my physical condition.
Best of luck!

Follow-up question. Is there a significant risk in buying the international version other than the warranty issue (over $500 cheaper) ?
They are not for me,but some feel that there are few problems and don't mind taking the risk.

Say what???? Nikon's front element does not, nor has it EVER rotated while focusing OR zooming. No idea where you ever got this false notion.
Tamron's 28-75 f/2.8 is another good alternative and you don't have to worry about buying an international version to save money. B&H sells it for $500.00. You give up 4mm on the wide end but, I haven't found that to be a problem. Filters are much less expensive also.

Tokina. Built like a tank and super sharp. No image stabilization.

So sorry, MT, I should have mentioned, I was referring to the nearest Nikon equivalent (at that time), the 28-85 lens, where the front rotated while focussing. But it was some time ago when I bought the Sigma. Digital was not on the photographic scene.
Your daughter is shooting with a full frame Nikon then. You didn't specify in your post. I rented the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX lens. I was very impressed with it. It's sharp and has fast and quiet autofocus.
