The Slater is the only remaining DDE left. It was originally sold (given?) to the Greek Navy after the war (WW2?, Korea?, Vietnam? -- not sure). When the Greeks no longer wanted it, it was scheduled to be cut up for scrap, but some enterprising ex-navy (I think) bought and it was refurbished and placed in the Hudson river in Albany, NY where it is now a floating museum. This series of ten photos from the more than 35 that I took will show you a little bit about the ship. Visiting it was an interesting experience.
Destroyer escorts were used for protecting the convoys in WW2 and for anti-submarine activities.
Hope you get a chance to someday visit this piece of history.
Bud
PS I was in the Army during the Korean war.

They reinforced the hull so it could stay anchored at Albany in the winter. Thanks for looking.

I was on a MSO and remember well the creamed sliced dried beef. It was commonly served for breakfast and referred to as Sh?t on a Shingle.

Super shots of the Destroyer Escort. I wonder what the purchase price was, and the cost to refurbish the ship? It looks ready for action now.

We also called it SOS when I was in the Army, and when I ask my wife to make it I usually ask for SOS. She has modified it and added string beans to the recipe.

Here is a quote about the Slater which gives a little more info. I'm still looking for cost info to post.
Bud

"USS Slater is a World War II destroyer escort restored to its 1945 configuration. Of 563 built during World War II, the SLATER is the only destroyer escort left afloat in the United States. After serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters, the ship was decommissioned and then, in 1951, given to Greece where she served the Hellenic Navy for 40 years. USS Slater is a National Historic Landmark. Guided tours available April through November, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located on the Hudson River near the intersection of Broadway & Quay Street, Albany, NY 12202. 518-431-1943. www.ussslater.org."

Nice to see the old girl saved and restored.

In the last photo it appears that the guy on the top bunk may have had a bed-wetting problem.

When I joined the Army in June 1960, our bus from New Haven, CT went to Ft Dix, NJ arriving around 1130 at night. We were brought to the mess hall for our 1st meal in the army and it was SOS. Never ate it gain after that night.

Either that or there was a leak or condensation in the pipes above.

The other version was ground up hamburger in the same type of sauce served on noodles!
When I enlisted for 2 years in 1953, the Sargent said there must have been a mistake and it should have been 3. I told him that he was full of it and I wouldn't sign his paper for three years. He finally find the appropriate regulation. Then he said "you're on k.p." Spent three days peeling potatoes and washing pots and pans. But I finally made out okay, because after nine months I got a direct commission as a second lieutenant and after two more years was discharged as a first lieutenant.
