Welcome to our forum!

You can still buy film and have it processed, so it's just a matter of how well the camera is working. I bought an old Argus C3 on ebay, but I combined it with several other oldies to make a lamp. What model do you have?

Hey, Jerry - post a pic of you camera lamp. I got some old odds 'n ends cameras and your lamp is 'now that is sonething different.'

Duke, I don't know if you sent this as a joke, but will answer it as a serious submission, but will, also, be quite blunt.

If you go to any of the camera trade or swap meets, you will usually see cartons containing old, cheap
film cameras like your Argus with signs saying, "Free", "Help yourself" etc. I hope you didn't pay more than $3.00 for it. If you haven't heard, we are now deep into the digital era. Film photography is dead except for some limited professional use or by a hobbiest who enjoys playing around with it.

Film is not readily available except from a few speciality dealers and is expensive. Processing is, even, more scarce and extremely expensive. If you intend to try developing your own, there are no packaged developing kits available at all. You'll be on a desert island without a paddle.

If you really want to get into photography, there are excellent digital cameras and lenses to fit any budget. Come off of your desert island and smell the flowers.

Nothing forther from the truth. FILM IS AVAILABLE!!! Here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/24744-REG/Ilford_1574577_HP5_Plus_135_36_Black.html $4.65 cents for a roll of 36 exposures black and white Ilford film! You can also order from www.adorama.com, www.amazon.com to mentioned a few. Film is available in ALL formats 35mm, 120, 4X5, 8X10 sheets etc, etc. Just because you do not use film should never be saying that only "specialily" dealers have it and that is expensive.

Bad information is worst that no information at all.

If the camera works and it's light tight, I say use it. Film and processing are readily available by mail.

Why is it that some people make fun of someone who wants to use film? I know who. People that have no idea what pure photography is. people that can only get images using a computerized wonder DSLR, just because using film is too hard, to expensive. Creating images the way the great master did is not only fun but a way to truly show your knowledge in photography. I for one love to have total control in the camera, the developing process and on the printing stage. According to some of you this makes me "estrange" right?

Have some of you guys ever herd the expression, "If you have nothing good (or correct) to say, keep quite!) It truly applies here.

I'm the second car hooked to your train, bring up the steam and let's roll. I to can't stand these digital people who think they are photographers. Not saying all are but I've seen plenty that think PS or some editing software is going to make a work of art from a crappy photo to start with.

Film and an Argus is a good way to start. I started with a Practica SLR I bought in 1953. Now I use digital, Sony A200 & Samsung NX100. Also Canon 7, Zorki 4, Zorki 6 and an Argus C4, these are all film. Less easy than digital, less flexible than digital, but sometimes more fun. Enjoy!

Film will range in price from around 3 dollars for a Kodak 200 ASA color, 24 shot roll to 12 dollars for a high end 36 shot high end B/W. Processing is not available in most areas over the counter any longer, it gets sent in or you can send it in yourself. Processing will cost around 15 dollars for a 24 short roll, put on CD it goes up from there. If you want prints, it is 1.00 each. So a single roll of 24 shots is total $48.00, 2 dollars per print. You can get a reasonable all in one Digital for around 400.00 it eliminates the hard cost of film. The best part of digital is that you can shot nearly unlimited shots. You can get instant feed back, and improve your skills very quickly. You just look at you shots on the computer and delete them when you are done if there not what you expected. I have thousand of hard photos on files that I rarely look at but my digital pix's scroll endlessly on the three computer screens at work and at home. Put the Argus on the mantel and let people admire it. Spend as much as you can afford on a digital camera. Good tools will yield good results when used correctly. I been shooting pictures for 30 years. I gave published work and gallery work as well as industrial shots which is my specialty. Happy shooting.

The reason to shoot film is for the experience, fun and nostalgia of doing it; nothing to say how much you will learn about photography by doing it. As I said before, shoot B & W and process it yourself and for two reasons. One, you'll do a much better job, get a far superior negative and learn tons of understanding that you never will by sending it off. Learn the zone system and shoot using it. Would be even better to do your printing too but that takes a little investment and a much larger space for a darkroom; well worth it if you can do so.

My first 35mm camera was an Argus C3 and I have one in my camera collection as a reminder of my early days. Believe me, unless you are or masochist or this post was a joke, you want to go digital. If you are not wanting to spend a lot of money, check the Canon or Nikon on-line company websites and find a refurbished camera of the complexity you would be comfortable to start with. I bought my wife a very nice small Canon Powershot refurbished for $35 last year and she's getting some really good images from it. Good luck with you new efforts!

From a guy that's been doing photography since roughly 1953:
You can learn to take photos just as well with digital or film. If you want to learn film processing that's another skill that a few folks want to learn and enjoy. If you want to learn digital post-processing that's another skill that the vast majority of current photographers choose. Some of us started with film and now do digital and some have only done digital.
All are valid endeavors, just different. Many film photographers end up doing both since some film processors return digital files or a print and digital file.

I've always been interested in photography in my mid 60a would like to learn the basics, just bought an Argus is it still possible to take and develop photos with this camera?any advice or feed back would be greatly appreciated thx

That's awesome!

Yes, it's not only possible it's a lot of fun.

You can go about it however you like; color, black, and white, send out for developing, do it yourself, scan it yourself, send scanning out, print in the darkroom or print digital images.

What are you planning?

Shooting black and white and developing at home is the simplest and most cost effective method.

You can start with a Paterson daylight tank kit ($29.00) and HC-110 concentrate enough to do years worth of rolls of film ($35.00) and then a scanner would be good to have ($200.00)

Once you have those things, you are in business!

If you want to send your film out, I'd suggest shooting either cheap color film (Kodak UltraMax 400 at $2.99 per roll) and sending it to Willow photo Lab (4 rolls, with 4x6 prints and scans to CD's plus index prints is $32.00 shipped)

If you have any specific questions just PM me.

Glad to have you aboard the analogue train!
