Republican national security experts hate Donald Trump. Former Republican environmental officials hate Donald Trump. Current Republican politicians hate Donald Trump. It seems like everyone hates The Donald, but none of these Republicans are willing to accept responsibility for creating this political nightmare.

In the last few days we have seen 50 Republican national security experts single letter saying that, “Look, if Donald Trump becomes president, that is going to be a disaster for America’s national security.” A day or two after that, we have former Republican Environmental Protection Agency officials coming out and saying, “If Donald Trump is president, it’s going to be a disaster for the American public.” Before that we had Olympia Snowe. We’ve had former advisors, current politicians. Everybody doesn’t want to endorse Donald Trump. They say he’s horrible. They’re going to vote Hilary Clinton instead.

That’s fine. That’s great. What these Republicans miss is that it’s not Donald Trump. It’s the Republican base. It’s the voters, the mentality, that these Republicans for so long helped to create. Now, they don’t want to take any credit for Donald Trump. They want to get as far away from him as possible. It’s time for them to just stop distancing themselves and to take responsibility for what they created.

Donald Trump is not an abnormality. He’s not something that just spontaneously generated. He is the result of decades of backwards Republican’s policy. It’s not going to stop when he goes away. The voters in the Republican base believe the things that he says. They feel the same way that he does. They feel that way because people like the Coke brothers, people like George W. Bush, the leaders and the Christian right have told them that this is what they should believe, that this is how they should feel. For years they’ve told them that African Americans are holding them back. Lazy people on Welfare are stealing their money. Immigrants are coming across the border and taking their jobs. These godless liberal atheists are trying to attack their religion and make us all not believe in God. That’s what these people have been saying for too long.

Yeah, Donald Trump is an atrocity, but he is the Republican’s atrocity. Rather than distancing themselves from him, it’s time for Republicans to step up, take responsibility for him, and tell us all that they’re very sorry.

What is it that the Republican establishment should apologize for? If it's that their modus operandi has been to promise one thing in election campaigns (smaller government, individual responsibility, etc.) and then governing differently, I wouldn't hold my breath. If it's for anything else, the base won't believe that they understand what they've done or that they're sorry for it.

You're missing the other half of what the Republican establishment has been doing over the last 10-15 years to stir up the base - stoking the flames of hate and bigotry, scapegoating, demonizing, convincing the Christian right wing voting block that godless liberal atheists are trying to attack their religion "war on Christianity Fox News narrative" bullshit, creating the hate monster that they thought they could control as a weapon against the GOP's main political opposition. But this Hate Frankenstein has broken out of the lab and is loose on the streets, no longer under their control, OOPS!!!

Trump will lose in a landslide but that will be a very hollow victory for progressives for two reasons. First, you are right in that the problem is not Trump, but Trumpism. Secondly, Clinton is only a progressive insofar she is pushed to it.

The Republican party as we have known it may well be dead. For years they have pandered to the loonies and delivered nothing. The loonies, on their own, cannot win a national election as we shall soon see. And the Republican "establishment" cannot seem to manage their own way out of a revolving door.

The real struggle begins after the election. The loonies have already convinced themselves that the election is rigged (they may be right for the wrong reason, The Electoral College itself is the original rig but the loonies won't get that far because this is not a thinking crowd). They will complain loudly about a rigged election ONLY because they will not like the outcome) and Trumps Second Amendment remarks just play into that particular insanity. He may not have meant exactly what he said, but the unhinged in this crowd will take it to heart. And the unhinged in this crowd are legion.

We will smell the stench of the extreme right only after the election.

Not too long the dog whistle wasn't meant to stampede the horses. Trumps latest outburst was received loud and clear, about as subtle as garlic. Look at all the comments in the last day, just here in the attic, about Clinton's violent demise.

Yepers. Pretty hard to deny the effect on the unhinged, even if you deny Trump's intent.

In that last 24 hours, we've seen an explosion of right wing chatter about:

1 Is Hillary sick?
2 Is Hillary dying?
3 Should Hillary die?
4 Should someone shoot her?
5 Would one be a patriot for shooting her?

If nothing else, the Trumpet helped stir up morbid-themed chatter on the intertubes to record levels.
