I am new to this, hoping to get help. My son wanks me to take pics of his football team. I got a cannon T6 And im trying to find what lens to use to take shots during game Thanks Chuck
Will it be day or night?
Either way, have your son buy it for you, it's him that wants the pics!!!

I shot my granddaughter's soccer games with a Canon 60D and a Tamron 18-270 lens. Worked great for me. Now Tamron has a 16-300 mm which would be quite handy for your sports. Either would work on your T6

Also, welcome to the hog. Have fun taking the pictures, but don't forget to also enjoy the game.

The first lens mentioned is in the 18-200/28-300mm range - my favorite lens.

70-200 would work fine.
Games are often under the lights. Anything less than pro and some collage don't have enough funds to get good light.
To cover the lack of light, it's your choice to either raise the ISO value or get a faster lens, or both.

Well, you are in for a few challenges with this camera. Below average focus performance - only 9 AF points, and only one of these is a cross-type sensor, limited dynamic range (compared to Sony, Nikon and others), and slow burst rate (3 frames per second) will require some skill to make it all work for sports action.
That being said, your best bet would be to get a fast focusing, high quality, relatively fast lens, like a 70-200 F4 USM L. New they are around $600, but clean used ones can be found for around $350. This lens is quite sharp, and totally usable at F4.
If given a choice between the 70-300 F4-5.6 or even the L version, and this lens, it would be no contest. And between the consumer and the L version of the 70-300, the consumer version is optically nearly a twin of the L, for a fraction of the price. You do get weather and dust sealing, more robust materials in construction, etc for the $1300 price of the L, but IMHO, you won't be able to tell the difference between pics taken with either one.
I noticed that but didn't like to mention it, I thought it might be an American thing.

I'd buy a 100-400 lens made by Canon.
