A plane on the ground in Dubai was on fire and filling with smoke. So what did the passengers do? They scrambled to get their luggage.

EDIT: When I looked at it this morning, there were 17,404 views.

Why can't people take cell phone video horizontally?

I think I'd be pretty angry if some idiot in front of me was blocking the aisle while reaching for a bag!

Of course you're right about the luggage, but the last thing I'd do is adjust my phone to landscape while exiting a plane on fire.

Partly, it is because a cell phone's camera function is secondary. Cells are designed to be held, viewed and operated vertically as a phone.
Your camera's body and controls are oriented specifically for horizontal shooting.

Also, there is a lack of aesthetic awareness on the photographer's part. No consideration is given other than the need to zero in, capture and post online ASAP.

There's an app that makes video landscape format automatically. That should be the default on every cell phone.

People do the same thing when their home is on fire . Self preservation ought to come first , but preservation of our " stuff " seems to be equally or perhaps more important . Interesting to say the least .

Mad hell, I'd have knocked out of the way so hard he wouldn't walk right for a month.

Carl, problem is that while he was doubling over in much-deserved pain, he'd still be blocking the aisle.

All you have to do is walk over or on him. No problem!

Isn't this why we buy special insurance for our camera equipment? We'd leave it on the plane and get out as quickly as we can.

Well, I would have to think about it. My life is going to be much simpler if I can grab my carry-on bag. My wallet, money. credit cards, passport, drivers license are all in there. You may also have expensive stuff that you didn't want to expose to TSA thieving. In their defense, the airplane wasn't on fire yet, just smoke in the cabin. It did get a lot more serious very quickly after the engine explosion but... I would be mostly concerned about going down the emergency slides, there are enough injuries on every deployment without the hazards of banging bags. If the flight crew is still in control they will stop you from trying to get to your luggage.
