Just started to get serious learning about this camera I have. Cannon t1i. been tuned into this site and gettin alot of info...thanks for all the expert info.
Went to Big Bear Lake and had the setting on manual, f/5.6, 1/1500 sec, iso200. Here are a couple of shots, you can see one came out pretty good but the other on same setting not so good.
Hope they post ok.

you have two different lighing situations for each photo so the settings are going to get you two different outcomes. #1 the squirel looks a little under exposed, looks like you metered off the rock just in front.
#2 the dogs face is exposed wonderfully,he's body is in the shadows a little to much but still you did a great job for your first time using manual!
I would be proud of both of these!
I agree, great job for the first time shooting manual. MWAC great critique. You may be able to fix the squirrel by adding a little fill light in post. You always want to attempt to get the lighting right while you shoot, because adding light in post also adds some noise and other digital artifacts. Its tough shooting wildlife cause theyre usually scurrying around and seldom holding a pose for you, so
we get what we can and if you have to, you can fix it in post.
If youre shooting at 1/1500, there is no reason to bump your ISO up to 200. Try to always keep your ISO at 100 and bump it up only if youre shooting low-light conditions that limit your aperture and shutter range. The higher the ISO, the more the noise, and if you need to do something in post, like add fill-light to make that squirrel pop, then you want as little noise as possible.
1/800 is plenty fast for shooting squirrels. You can even shoot butterflies in flight at 1/800.
Great stuff, and great eye
keep it up!
