A senior programmer once told me that the enemy of good is 'Better.' This is a pretty good example of what happens when you try and make a good website 'Better'

This is what I was getting at. By previously accepted norms, you mean that the norm for transsexual people was to keep your head down, shut up and no matter what happens... DO NOT draw attention to yourself...

because that's how they've been living in a "society that was growing in stature".

I'm a tiny bit confused.

Are you saying that there is a "problem" with transgenders NOT drawing attention to themselves?

Do YOU walk around drawing attention to yourself all the time?

Previously, no one really cared where transgenders did their business.
I'm sure they've been in "others" bathrooms for years and NO ONE noticed.

Now that people are talking about it, it's become a huge "problem".

Personally, I think the ONLY area that might deserve any discussion pertains to the schools.
I don't know what transgenders have been doing, but I also believe that there are not very many who "have the operation" before they get out of high school. They're just too young.

We already have laws to deal with perverts, so......what are we really talking about here?

And a very good question, at that.
When they lived in societies where the cultural norms were clearly understood, they used great discretion in their public lives. When they lived in societies where the cultural norms were fluid, they became bolder in their challenges to those norms. It's not a coincidence that the former state was typical in a society growing in stature and the latter state was typical in a society in decline.

I think he's implying that the fact that transsexuals ARE now drawing attention to themselves, is because we are a society in decline. Something like this would never happen if the society were not in decline.

I disagreed with him.
