One day unfortunately is not much time to do all that in any detail. Québec City was a busy seaport that had to reinvent itself after completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Completed in 1959, it allowed ocean going ships to take their cargo all the way to the Great Lakes. A big part of that reinvention was promoting Old Québec and the historical events which occurred there. Québec City is a major tourist destination, and Old Québec is a beautiful walled area with dozens of wonderful restaurants and many shops, and European charm all over it. It sits high above the modern city, which is far less interesting.

At both Quebec City and Montreal, we had lunch at local sidewalk cafes. I was surprised at that because Canada is so cold for so much of the year. I guess it is part of the "French experience" they provide if they can.

The hotel was made by the Canadian Pacific Railroad; that sort of thing was common a century ago. The hotel basically reflects the European style which also distinguished the railroad station built around the same time {my wife and I walked to the station also - maybe a mile from the hotel}

We too have eaten at sidewalk cafes in both Montreal and Old Quebec. The summers are short up there and I think they want to enjoy the nice weather outside as much as possible.

1) Ile aux Coudres, near Quebec City, in the river
2) Ancient Tadoussac (where Saguenay river powerfully enters St Lawrence)
3) Berri de Montigny subway station, Montreal, at rush hour, for people-watching
4) Train trip from Quebec City or Sept Iles to Schefferville, Labrador (Quebec), maybe with a guided fishing tour -- train will let you off anywhere and pick you up when you flag it down
5) If you can find it and get invited in as I did, a priest's residence at highest point in Quebec City, overlooking everything -- amazing, absolutely unique strategic view, surely known to Montcalm

My guest is you're coming with a cruse ship, if so you'll be landing next to the lower Quebec ( basse Ville in french) which is by itself a very photogenic location, montmorency falls is also very nice place, be advised that depending on the wind it can be a VERY wet location.

Chateau Frontenac, which is a hotel, but very imposing. The Plains of Abraham, the site of two great battles, the Battle of Quebec in 1775 as Americans hoped to annex Canada, and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, between the French and English in 1759. Not much there but panorama's. And there is the old city itself, which has a photo op virtually everywhere. Take a group walking tour. We had a terrific guide. We stayed in the old city. Pricier than staying outside it, but we felt much more immersed in the experience.

The battle was led by Benedict Arnold for the Americans. This was before his change of heart. When he was a hero. He got wounded there too.

Quebec City (the old city) is beautiful and full of photo opportunities. If possible, take the ferry across the St. Lawrence in the morning and photograph the Frontenac from aboard the boat -- you'll be glad you did! You may want to do it again at sunset and during the blue hour.

I would also visit the Citadel during the changing of the guard (even after the guard has been changed).

Walk along the promenade and take in the St. Lawrence vistas.

Just outside of Quebec City is the Ile d' Orleans (and island); take the road around the island photograph some of the farm buildings along the way.

While on the Ile d'Orleans trip, be sure to visit the Chute Montmorency (a waterfall that is bigger than Niagra Falls -- but not as wide and imposing).

Further up the road is Ste. Anne de Beaupre and basilica and shrine.

My biggest photography tip is bring a good pair of walking shoes and just discover the upper and lower parts of the old city (of course you should bring you camera along with you on your discovery walks).

Above all else, be sure to enjoy!

A couple more if you visit Montreal.

The Chalet atop the Mont Royal; great location for downtown cityscape photos. (Plenty of parking, requires a 10 / 15 minute walk). Beaver Lake same location.
Old Montreal and it's port. Old architecture (Photo ops), many restaurants, Caleche ride. Pointe aux Callières museum. Gibby's restaurant (pricey)
Try a local specialty snack... the Poutine (fries, cheese and sauce) if you like this type of food.

Near Québec city; Ile d'Orléans with its many quaint small villages (many photo ops). I posted a few photos in November 2014.

Enjoy your trip
George
