500mm handheld at 1/100s?? ... OS??

This little lady was standing in heavy shade about 25 feet away and I really thought it would be an impossible shot since she looked like a shadow except for the white belly. But it was such a cute pose I thought "what the heck ... let's experiment". I set my Sigma 150-500 to max zoom and set my camera to "Auto" (GASP!) just to see what would happen. The camera selected 1600 ISO, f6.3 and 1/100s. At 500mm and 1/100s "handheld" (by a 56 year old diabetic) in heavy shade there's no way this shot should be in focus at all (yeah ... I know it's not "tack sharp"!). This makes me think that the Optical Stabelizer in this lens might work much better than I imagined it would! (only PP was crop and slight brightness/contrast adj.)

Not too bad. :) It looks like you're getting reasonable results at about 2-1/3 stops slower than preferred.

very cool expression. to me where it might be a little soft doesn't matter, it helps with the mood. i am a telephoto nut and am now suffering from lens envy!

The OS on that Sigma is EXTREMELY good. I routinely handhold it at 500mm, thats exactly why I bought it was for the OS feature.

Suggestion: next experiment try " P" allowing you to force the shutter speed higher or several other combinations of EV,
TV, ISO, or AV

MT ... I actually made the decision to get this lens after reading some of your posts, but this "handheld" experience was beyond my expectations. But I have to say that this baby is really giving my biceps a workout! (can't really complain ... I read the comments about the weight before I bought it). Next purchase will be a "sturdier" tripod!

Hi jadeast ... actually, I routinely shoot TV or AV, but with either of those I NEVER would have thought to select a setting that would give 1/100sec exposure handheld and would never have realized how well the Optical Stabelization actually works on this lens. Everything I have read about this lens says "handheld OK as long as you use 1/1000sec or faster" which really limits you in lower light situations. I was thrilled to "accidentally" find that this kind of result was possible at only 1/100sec handheld!

I think that lens is my most wanted, I've seen some great photos taken with this, and I wouldn't be ashamed of the result you've got.
