I saved and saved and went to buy a new camera to replace my slowly-dying Nikon D70. I thought I wanted the D90. When I got to the store, my fingers would not wrap around the thicker body of the D90. I have small hands and short fingers. I can type incredibly fast, but apparently my reach is not as long as many photographers because I could not comfortably operate the controls I most often use. I ended up with a Nikon 3200 and LOVE it. I was so worried about being lumped with novices (Nikons with four digits are novices; two digits better; one numeral, pro). Well, I get the shots I want and I can hold the darn thing. Determine which models do what you want them to do and then "try them on for size."

Great advice!! Novice is only a person's opinion. Who cares what others think.

That's interesting. I just looked up both on BH (bodies only). The MKII was going for $2,200 & the MKIII was priced at $3,500. Adorama & Calumet were the same.

I just don't believe, at this point in time, the upgrade is worth $1,300; not to me anyway.

You're right - I got Google-ebayed - it was actually a 7D for that price . . . I'll have to agree with you about that much for an upgrade - although low light performance could make it attractive, but if I'm gonna dream, I'm gonna dream BIG!

Here's my idea of dreaming large. Ain't gonna happen in my lifetime!

Now THAT is an expensive camera. Takes fantastic pictures, but the cost is out of my league. I still think you will be very surprised at how good the 5D Mark II is. An awful lot of professional photographers seem to use them.

Stop teasing me with these Hassies please. I'm trying to convince myself of its cost effectiveness because of no film cost.

Wait! Shhhh. Quiet! I hear something.

Someone's in trouble. It sounds like "wlgoode, help me! I'm a Hasselblad being held hostage in this camera store. You've got to free me!"

Omission- assume I placed a lol after my Hassie post

Hi all,
I am only new to the site and am an avid leisurely photographer. I shoot my sporting events, day to day living, nature and other events. I demand good quality and great zoom range in my shots. Although I like all of these things, I really prefer to be able to have a camera I don't have to add bits to. I assume the dslr camera rage is the way to go but factoring in the manual options and add ons I would prefer a still like the Canon G1x. Can someone tell me which camera is good to buy. I've heard the canon is great but don't know. 1k and under would be great and auto mode essential!! Hope someone can help.

If you are concerned about the 3200 read Ken Rockwell's comments.

Guys I have pretty much decided on the 60d. I suppose everybody makes great points and in terms of bridge v dslr, there are a lot of pros and cons. I really just want to get a great sharp image in both sporting and everyday scenes, low light as well as lots of clear zoom and micro if possible. There is no lens that could cover all of those things well i guess. I am looking at the 15-85mm lens. I hope this is going to be the right choice. I'm off to the show tomorrow so we'll see. What do you guys think of the choice and any suggestions about the lens??

I would say you did your homework. The camera and lens both get high marks in most reviews.

I'm just about to leave for the camera show in Melbourne, and I appreciate your comments on my choice. I can't wait to now find the best price. Should I do with ebay overseas or spend the extra money and go with a store. Decisions decisions decisions!!

Ive just come back from the show and I have been told the best way to go is like I chose the 60d and instead of the 15-85 to go for the 18-200. What do you all think. Also which memory card should I go for. 1000X 150MB/S sounds like the way to go in a 16 or 32 g am I ok with this choice?

The 18-200 sounds like a good choice. The 15-85 is too limited. I'd go with the 16 g. If a card fails, it is best to have fewer eggs in the basket.

The 18-200 is good on the high end, but on the low end is only about 29mm on a 60D. If you do a lot of landscape photography, that may not be wide enough. You need to tell us what category most of your photos fall into, if we are going to be able to give you informed advice.

Ok then, as I said, I am still very new to this. To be quite honest most of my photos are going to be of people places and events including some basic sporting (I coach a boys soccer team). I feel like wide landscape style photography would really be something I would utilise. As I mentioned before I assume there would not only be 1 lens i could use. I suppose this is Ok because I can see myself getting multiple lenses one day. At least one to start with would be good though. Hope this helps.
