It may be the future, but it isn't here yet.
I just checked out a comparison of six different pixel enlargement programs, with pictures, all were tested going to 400% enlargement. None are all that great. I can do better with a longer high IQ lens, getting closer etc. Even using my extenders my results are better.

Now for very large prints viewed from a distance they would be OK.

It is already here .....You don't get it - 400% has no practical relation !

Extenders are in NO way "better" - maybe equal under certain circumstance. I am talking about 1.1-2X cropping - NOT 400% !

IF you can not afford the longer "high IQ" lens - and do not want the weight/size management issues, and/or it may be impossible to get closer - you will/should be happy to crop and pixel enlarge !

Huh? Say that again in English please. I taught history not math/tech speak.

Take a photo without the 1.4X extender. Now enlarge that image so that a central rectangle of it shows only what would be shown had the 1.4X extender been used (on the same lens, of course). That central image is 71% of the area of the original image (comparing 1.0 to 1.4), meaning it has used 71% of the pixels of the original image. So, if your camera is a 51 mp one, you end up with an image made of 36.2 mp. But keep in mind that if the extender does not perform optically as well as your lens (used here), the numerical comparison here does not apply straightforwardly. In other words, a 36.2 mp image from a fine lens may approach (or even surpass) a 51 mp image made with a lens of less quality.

Thanks, I had that figured out from the original but I have to keep up my "Semi-edjumacated/sivilized hillybilly image." Keeps people from expecting me to do a lot of things I don't want to do anyway. Not to mention it is a lot easier to put one over on someone who underestimates you. Even better if they overestimate themselves.

Hmmm, . . . maybe you had it figured and maybe you didn't. Based on what you've disclosed, we really cannot take your word for it. ;-)

Hey I am the same guy that at 16 got transferred from one college prep English teacher to another. The new class was having an essay test on MacBeth the next day. I had never read anything but quotes from it. And had a lot of homework for other college prep classes that night. I spent 15 minutes skimming it. BS'd my way through two pages during the test and got a "B" with the note "I can tell you didn't have time to read MacBeth, but this is the best spur of the moment "snow job" I have ever seen so you get a B, don't do it again." From then on I had straight A's in that class

I also have both the 60D and the 6D. I sold my Canon 100-400 and purchased the Tamron 150-600 and find that I made the right decision. I like the quality of my photos much better now even though I had the Canon recalibrate for perfection. Just sayin'
