All your responses are much appreciated, folks. Looking forward to being part of the Hog.
You all confirmed my direction. Nikon lens it will be.
Here comes my 2nd question. The 18-300 will be on the camera most of the time. Should I have something like a 50mm prime lens also? What do you reckon?

I carried the Nikon 18-200 on my D7000 and D7100. The 18-300 is more of the same according to many who use it; this is an excellent lens for most common use. When I recently changed to Sony, I again bought an 18-200 and use it constantly.

To your second question, I also have an f1.8 50mm for the Nikon and one for the Sony. This lens gets infrequent, but very valuable use, especially inside low-light areas like aquariums (aquaria??) or churches and cathedrals in Mexican cities. The Sony high ISO is very good but above 6400 the noise becomes troublesome so the prime comes into its own.

Hi, welcome aboard. The d7200 is a terrific camera. The suggestion here the 35/1.8 and if you can swing it 85/3.5 Micro. Look forward to postings from you trip.

Wait a minute. Please help me understand how a 35 (or 50) or 85 would be useful on a safari? Are you really gonna get that close to wild life?

Finally going to buy my first DSLR.
Most likely going for a Nikon D7200.

I'm torn on what lenses though and I would appreciate your advice. Going on safari later this year and was going to buy NIKKOR 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3G ED VR. Also saw the Tamron equivalent 16-300. Has anyone got any experience with both. Appreciate your responses. Thank you

Hi Wolfi! My husband and I have been on 2 safaris (Tanzania and Kenya) in recent years and are headed to Botswana in September. I have a Nikon d7100 and d500, and plan to take both my Nikkor 18-300 (I concur with others...a terrific lens for everyday use and also for safari...) as you will need the wide angle more often than you realize as you are often very close to the wildlife and don't need a super-zoom. Plus you'll want to take photos of the camps and landscapes, etc. as well. But you may want to think about renting or purchasing a longer zoom, either 500 or 600 reach for those animals that are more elusive (in our experience, leopards are often in distant trees, for example) and you'll appreciate very much the ability to zoom in on them. But I'd guess for 90% of your shots, the 18-300 will be your lens!

Just curious...where is your safari and with what tour company??? I know you'll be incredibly amazed and want to go back!

Nikon 7200 is simply wonderful!!!!! I use it with a Nikkor 35 mm 1.8 and Sigma 10-20 mm 3.5 and your 18 - 300 will be all you ever need.

Welcome to the group Wolfi. When I purchased my 7200 I got the kit lens 18-140mm with it and It stays on my camera most of the time when I'm not shooting birds or wildlife. It's a great lens and not to expensive, very sharp and quick. I also carry a 55-300mm (another inexpensive) lens with me when I'm out and that pretty much covers the range that I need most of the time.

Go for the Nikon D500 instead of the D7200. It is much better fit in every way for the safari use. I know it is more expensive, but that is also the only thing where it does not outperform the D7200. Still the price difference is too little not to go for the D500.

If this is your very first DSLR Camera, you might consider looking at the Nikon D3300, it is highly rated as a Beginner's DSLR, I just bought one and I love it. Small, Light, 24mp, easy to use, produces fine images, UTube has many excellent videos on this Camera F.Y.I.
Go to your local professional Camera Store and Test one out, and see for yourself.
Also, consider a "Re-furbished" from the Factory DSLR Camera, they also have had many Positive reviews, on this site and others too.

The D3300 produces excellent images and is generally a great entry level camera, but for a safari, the D7200 would be a much better choice for at least three reasons: 1)it has a better focusing system, 2)it has better dynamic range and 3) it is weather sealed.

Welcome. I think you'll enjoy this forum. There are lots of experts ready with good advice here. Personally, I'm a Pentax freak because when I started lo those many years ago, I couldn't afford Nikon either. I've found that the OEM lenses give better quality so I'd stick with them. But it is a function of what you can afford. The after market lenses don't give crappy results, it's just that the OEM's are a step higher quality.

A couple more things. Take a good tripod. And I'd almost go for a 500mm and maybe a doubler. I was in Tanzania a couple of years ago in the Serengetti and there are a lot of really long range shooting opportunities. I used a 150-500mm alot. And occasionally a doubler. Best of luck and good shooting.
