I get the best price quote I can find on-line, then go to a local realtor (maybe Best Buy) and they match the price. If we keep buying things on-line, in 10 years we won't have any retailers other than grocery stores and pharmacies.

Somehow I just don't consider Best Buy a local retailer, but, other than that, I couldn't agree more. For me, it's just over and hour drive each way just to get to a decent professional camera store. When I don't have that time, mostly, I do order from B&H and they are one great retailer.

That warranty matters to me too. Question: why does the warranty depend on where the equipment is purchased? Is the equipment of lesser quality in Europe or Asia or is it just in order to sell the same stuff at a higher price here in the USA?

If you purchase a serial number intended for the USA then the USA company gets their portion of the profit. If you purchase a grey market item in the US then the US company doesn't get any of the sale profit but has to support and repair the product. Basically the US company which has to rely on their profits to remain in business (Nikon USA is a separate part of Nikon World Wide (Nikon Japan) and has to answer for their profit and loss. The company divisions (which each is run as a separate company) Nikon The Americas (Melville NY), Nikon Asia/Oceania/Middle East (which includes Africa), Nikon Europe (which includes Russia) which all answer to Nikon Corporate in Japan. Now, if you are from the US and are on a trip or visiting in one of the foreign areas and decide to purchase a camera or lens, all you have to do to get service in the USA is provide a copy of the invoice and a copy of your hotel bill or other proof (airline pass, travel voucher, whatever) showing that you were in the overseas country at the time of the purchase. HOWEVER, remember that if you purchase a Nikon lens in the USA then you automatically get the 1 year plus 4 year extended warranty on the lens. If you or a citizen of a European, Asian or other are purchases that same lens in that country and do NOT purchase the 4 year extended warranty then the lens will ONLY have the original 1 year warranty.

Be careful with Amazon. Many times the prices pertain to a used item. Very easy to miss this detail. I use B&H 99% of the time.

Just a thought. If we lived in New York, B&H would be a local retailer, not a online resource.

I thought B & H Photo had the best prices for lenses but after checking out the price for a Tokina on Amazon, I was shocked to see that the same Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II Digital Zoom Lens was $ 152 cheaper on Amazon. I am hoping that here in China it may be even cheaper.

Was curious where UHH members got their equipment from?

Prefer B&H. Next would be Adorama, Cameta Camera, ebay. Occasionally Craigslist. Amazon is occasionally cheaper but unless you are a Prime customer, have found shipping and taxes could be a factor depending on price of item(s). I like Amazon for product research and reviews.

I use B&H and Adorama both are excellent and don't charge me sales tax and most items I buy ship free. Amazon now charges Florida residents sales tax. B&H customer support is the best.

Amazon
B&H
Adorama
KEH
Cameta Camera
eBay

Beware gray market if you buy Nikon gear. Nikon USA will neither fix it, nor honor the international warranty.

I have been with B&H since 2008, never had a return issue, love there customer service. i have only used B&H, maybe I should check others on pricing.
I have bought over 25K worth of equipment from B&H since 2008. I returned two minor items without a problem.
