Which canon 18-135 lens will be best on my canon t3i? I am not up on all of the specs.

Here is a review of the new USM version which also compares it to the older STM version. Both the STM version and the USM version are much better then the originsl 18-135mm. The USM and STM version are very quiet and both feature electronically controlled full time manual focus. The newer USM motor however, focuses much faster then the STM version. All three versions will work fine on your t3i, but I think the latest version (USM) might be the best choice.

Dlay, your camera will take any of the EF or EFs mounts. The EFs mounts are for the Crop sensor Rebels (which the T3i is) or the xxD. I have the 18-135 USM version. It was my second midrange zoom. The 18-55 EFs was my first. I also have the 15-85 EFs that is amazing. I see the USM and STM starting at 100USD used. If doing vides look at the STM as it is quit when shooting. The 18-135 on a crop sensor is a great carry around.

Optically they're all OK, STM and USM are better than the original micro-motor version. If you are video oriented, perhaps the STM is best, if still photography the USM could be better.

The 18-135 has been my basic "walk around" lens for years, first the original then the STM. I've taken some great pictures with it. In my experience you can't go wrong with it.

I have a 18-135 that came with my 60D when I purchased at BestBuy in Canada a little over three years ago. How do I tell if I have the STM or the USM? Can't find anything on the lens to show me. It does say made in Taiwan. Or is there somewhere on the lens that maybe I missed that will tell me which one it is. Thanks for your help.
It will say STM on the lens. It's not USM since that's a brand new item. You are most likely MicroMotor focus. Noisy for video.

I've looked all over the lens and can't find any lettering what so ever to tell me what kind of lens it is. Since USM is new as you mention, probably STM. I don't take videos with my 60D so no problem there.
If there is no STM label on lens it's not STM.

My lens does not indicate STM as yours does. So I guess I just got a cheap or old style lens with the package when I purchased at BestBuy. The package came with a nice camera bag and another battery. At that time little did I know about different type lenses like STM or USM. But I am learning. Thanks

Thanks everyone, info is very helpful, looking for a used or reconditioned stm or usm version.

I have the STM model. For my purposes, I find my images are sharper with this lens. I don't take video, just still.
