Thanks, Bill - now I understand the greater effective FOV for video

I was going to take my camera on its first walk with a monopod today, but the weather sucks!

It is a good news/bad news deal. Of course the good news is that there is more telephoto reach. The bad news is that if you want some use out of your wider angle lenses, it does not work.

My GX7 could turn off "EX TELE CONV". My replacement GX8 will not when shooting 4K.

For me, the primary purpose of the GX8 and 100-400 Leica was long telephoto 4K video in an "outdoor" configuration. Second was still photos. Third was a camera that could do both well. That means the good news outweighs the bad!

I have another camera that does really well in the wide to normal range for both 4K and still photos.

Handheld. Check the eyes and whiskers. High ISO, fast shutter and JPEG straight from the camera. No post processing. I think this lens will work when I find bears, wolves, hawks, etc. As hard as I tried, I could not get my "old" GX7 and Lumix 100-300 to do this well.

Terrific Bill! Electronic shutter? Pistol grip?

I tweaked my in camera Jpegs in the Panasonic to look more like Olympus- added a little more pop and color and a little less contrast. I do Raw plus Jpeg - sometimes it nice to just use a Jpeg right out of the camera!

I have big hands and don't need a pistol grip. Yes, it was handheld, electronic shutter, high ISO and high shutter speed. I prefer RAW and playing in Lightroom, but for this topic it seemed like a good idea to post a JPEG with GX8 defaults.

Near Banff, an Eagle was sitting on a rocky hillside at considerable distance. I got out my tripod, set the ballhead to be gimble like and decided to shoot 4K video. One of the reasons for getting a GX8 is to explore getting photos out of 4K video. Basically, the camera is shooting 30 frames 8MP photos every second. Each frame can be extracted as a still photo and Lightroom makes that easy.

As I wrote earlier, there is some additional telephoto or "crop factor" involved in 4K shooting. Using Lightroom I made some typical adjustments to contrast, clarity and sharpening and output a JPEG for posting here. Lightroom CC 2015.6 reports the Full Frame Equivalent in the Metadata and for this shot it is 1264mm (equiv)!

For comparison, I cropped a RAW image shot seconds earlier to the same dimensions, synchronized the adjustments and exported a JPEG. In other words, it should be the same "picture". The cropping from the 400mm shot is needed to match the "crop factor" of the 4K procedure.

Is one better than the other? Can a frame "grabbed" from a 4K clip be as useful as a cropped RAW?

Awfully good. Amazing performance from that 4K procedure, I'll have to try it.

Handheld RAW with full zoom and high ISO. We found them at a roadside turnout. I suspect the mother brought the lamb out of the woods because of a threat. Maybe a wolf?

I'm learning that I probably won't be trying to hand hold video and I've ordered a dot sight for quicker aiming that will be here this week.

Super image Bill! Nice and clean. I am not able to handhold for video either. After a minute or so the camera starts wobbling. But for everything else I have been able to hand hold. I would be interested how the dot sight works out.
I just started playing with the focus tracking today. I will work with it and report back. Do you routinely use it for BIF?

Is there anyone besides Bill and myself using this lens? If so jump right in and let us know how it's going :)
