Salzburg... old city... looking down 1958
In 1958... a music student in Salzburg, Austria... I took this picture looking down at the old city using my Kodak Retina and color slide film. Sometime in the past 10 years, I got the slide scanned to a digital file. The color was way off... very red... but Ive been able to adjust that. The pic is a little crowded and frantic, with so much in the shot. I have often tried to make 'something' of this shot... with little success. (Top picture)
In the spirit of Count Basie... "One more time"... Last week, I tackled it... 'one more once'. I turned it into a black and white photo... plugged in an old-time look... used a little white vignette around the edges... (I really don't like using a white vignette though!)... played around some... and came up with this interpretation of a less-than-than-wonderful original shot. (bottom pic)
Notice that since this is an old-style picture... the cars and buses (lower right) are gone!
And this is the fun of what I'm doing these days.
Guten Tag. Very nice pictures of Salzburg. I like the PP you did.

Must have been Ektachrome film. I had a number of my Ektachrome slides from back then turn reddish over the years. Seems other slides, Kodachromes and other brands, didn't.
I have been able to correct for that red tint using a Epson V600 and the software that comes with it. Way back in the film days I used a lot of bulk movie film and had it processed by the same firm that sold the film. It all turned red like your first picture. I have been very successful with the above process to get back the real colors.
Nice job you did. Did you try sepia or was it to washed out for sepia?
My first 35mm camera was a Retina 2A. I bought it used in 1964 before going in the Navy. While in Rota Spain I purchased my first Nikon with a 50mm f1.4 lens and sold the Retina tor a shipmate. The Retina took excellent photos. A few years ago I came across a Retina 2A in like new condition at a flea market and purchased it. Every now and then I run a roll of B&W through it. Excellent camera.
I don't know which Retina model I had in Salzburg (1958)... but it was a great little camera.
While in Salzburg, I traded an illuminated manuscript I had bought, for a Russian-made Leica. (it wasn't a true Leica.) But the Retina was better!

Terrific treatment of a wonderful city.. Spent many happy hours there attending concerts, dining etc. Recall an wonderful restaurant called Peter's Keller supposedly in business for over 600 years which offered a fabulous dessert called a Salzburger Knockeln. A million egg whites whipped to a froth, baked, with a wonderful sauce. Perhaps you've been there? In any event thanks for bringing back many wonderful memories.

I love the B & W. It looks like a postcard. And a Retina was my first 35 mm too. I bought it used in DC in '75 and left all the settings as the camera store fellow set them. It was a great camera.
Great recovery of an old photo. You put some life and mystery in this image. Congratulations.
