Past and Present Bodie, CA

This was taken July, 9, 2016 in Bodie , CA - a well-preserved ghost town. The preserve is not open until 9 am for the general public. At 10 AM you going to get unfavorable and harsh light. When given a lemon, make lemonade. And that is what was done here. The image was composed as intended, processed in Nik's HDR single image and finished in Topaz's Texture Effects. In a modern, glossy frame, this image could work nicely.

Your lemonade works for me (in fact, what looks like a hot, dry, perhaps dusty scene would have me reaching for one)! Really like the way you've composed the three objects; that distant building completes things nicely. Not sure I myself would have been bold enough to add those large-ish splotches (assuming they're not sensor dust :) ), but they seem to work.

A good vintage effect all round. Perhaps the large black splotches in the sky are a bit more than is needed.

It sure looks like a 100+ year old Daguerreotype that hasn't been taken care of. I've seen old pictures with this kind of damage. It's obvious that was the look you were going for, and you succeeded!

Thankyou Cathy. That is as intended.

Love the composition and perspective, and most of the processing. Not a fan of the sky; IMO it seems to be clamoring for attention...not unlike an immature member or two on UHH

Thank you for continuing to share your thought-provoking and interesting work, Mark!

Thanks, Linda. It is different, even for me. But you have to think-out-of-box. The picture when framed is not a stand-alone. In a home or hotel or lobby, it needs to work with it's surroundings. This image with new, modern and contemporary furniture would add a bit of age and reality.

Beautiful picture! Cathy Ann said abused Daguerreotype, which is one reason the sky does not bother me at all. It looks exactly like it would if it were a water-and-age-stained Daguerreotype or ferrotype. The truck is lighter so it draws the eye to itself. I think the sky makes a nice vignette that keeps one centered on the subject. The one thing that gives it away as a modern shot is the wide-angle effect, but it's also what makes the shot.

Considering where a print would hang as part of feedback comments... I like that, Mark.

Also, how interesting to read Chuck's comment referencing lack of wide angle "back then." I like how you guys are thinking!
