an interesting video describing how a NY Times reporter found a trash bag full of slides on a NYC street and tracked down the story behind the slides and how they got there.

Made me think of the bag of slides stored in the basement for decades - the discards not good enough to keep, yet couldn't throw them away. The ones that made it into sleeves, I've been slowly scanning into digital. All the time, I keep thinking no one will care... they will be tossed when I'm gone. Yet, I keep scanning.

My mom just moved from her condo to a retirement place. 3 bedroom with a garage to a 2 bedroom with no garage. You don't what to know how many slides we tossed (and how many we kept). Ouch!

I have a lot of old slides form both sides of the family, and I converted the ones worth keeping to digital.

Great story. She was a great photographer and a great person it would seem. I can see the story repeating in a few years when my family will face the same decisions. C'est la vie.

I too have wondered about my work. Someone will look at a photo, drop it in the trash, and think nothing of a photo that I treasured. I have a photo of a little girl about 4, in a dugout canoe on the Rio Dulce River trying to sell a dead crab. It's won awards locally, and I love it. But I guess it's like having an ugly kid that only a mother could love. I wonder how many beautiful images around the world are being dumped right this minute.

As the club photographer for my ski club in the 80s I have many pictures and slides of the members from the trips we took and from the activies that we had and have often thought about what to do with them.Several times I have started to throw them out only to change my mind. Some of the people have passed on and once in awhile some of us still get together and Reminise about the trips we took and the things we did;I often take the photo album to these get togethers and give away the photos to anyone who wants them.I still have all the negs from these prints. Why do I keep them I don't know. For the memories I guess.
