I used my camera to death - first time for me. Now I am looking for a new one, preferably not much over $1000. I do not do much indoor photography, but need something really good for closeups of animals and plants, and landscape/sunset. All of my digital have been non slr, but I have been using a Minolta Maxxum 9000 film camera for years - not so much lately. I would appreciate any suggestions.

I'd suggest checking Canon USA for refurbs, stretch the budget, T5i or T6i should do it, Bob.

For DSLRs Nikon, 3000 series and Canon Rebel series are a good start at your price point with money to spare. Both series produce excellent photos.

Last early spring I replaced my ancient Canon film camera with a Nikon D5500 and a Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD. Together, used, they were under $1,000. It is a very nice and versatile combination for the money.

I have friends that use Canon T5i and T6i with similar lens setups that are happy as well. Those would also come in under $1,000 used.

If you are not doing LARGE prints, the Sony RX10 I or II would serve you very well - no extra lenses to buy or interchange and GOOD quality. ........I like Jerry's credo - think twice, spend once !

NEW, about $800 and you are DONE. .....24-200mm EQUIV. f2.8

For about $1295.00 from B&H you can get a Pentax K-3 and a Pentax DA 18-270 which would give you a professional grade body and a Very good lens

I always recommend Canon. If you buy one of the Rebel cameras, they're excellent by the way, you'll need a macro lens for the closeups you mention. You may want to try one of their bridge cameras that can do closeups.

I recently bought a used Nikon D3300 with the 18-55 VRII kit Lens, for $375.00, after much research, many excellent reviews, considered a great DSLR Beginner's 24mp Camera.
Do your research, consider "Refurbished" Cameras and Lens from reputable Factory authorized Dealers.
I personally Deal with B&H Photo in N.Y.C. for most all of my Photography needs and wants.
Hope you have great success in all of your future Photography endeavors.

Don't listen to anyone on this site! JUST listen to me. You seem like a pretty smart guy so I'll only say this once and only once take a chance on your anger and don't be afraid of the shadows that lurk on the dark side. And above all don't be afraid of PANASONIC!!😇

I still use my first auto-focus camera once in awhile. It is a Minolta 7000 maxxum. Bought it when they first came out, its still going strong, even after my x-wife threw it on the floor one time. Made the loudest cracking sound bouncing off the wooden floor. Good luck with your hunt !!

For my money, $1000, I went to Olympus OMD EM10ii with kit 14-42, about $750, and 40-150 lens for $99. Currently saving for primes. As a former Nikon Fx & DX shooter I could not be more impressed with with this kit and seldom leave home w/o it.
