A very interesting old sign, painted on the brick wall by hand back when people had the time and patience to do such things. Was also struck by the adjacent fluorescent sign (a little hard to read in daylight) looks like it says "Shops - Lan Mart" - do you know anything about what sort of shops are there? Am I reading it correctly? What is "Lan Mart"?

These signs pop up all the time as buildings are rennovated, torn down, revealing the fabric of the past.

i believe the coca cola sign was repainted many years back . petaluma has some very nice old buildings , both commercial and residential .
some movies have been made here , such as "american graffiti ". i am not sure what the lan mart was originally , but it now is like a mini
mall with numerous shops and studios .

It was not because they had more time and patience but rather because painting a wall was the only technology around. The guys who painted these signs were called wall dogs. The amazing thing is how well they reproduced the logo, got the lettering level and all the same height. And they did this without having detailed patterns with which to work. They patterns were sketches drawn by hand at the final size on paper. Occasionally, you will see a wall dog but for the most part, the industry has adopted new materials.

The other class is a projecting wall sign and are no longer installed. Note the supports and safety chains. If you see one, it is a bit of history, especially if you find one rimmed with flashing, incandescent bulbs. Just like photography, signage has moved on.

Here is perhaps the most iconic of all historic signs. If you look down the page, you will also find another icon: the clock at Marshall Field's.
