It depends on the lens, but there's a good selection that work seamlessly.

And anyway most people can manage to focus and set the aperture, but haven't quite mastered the art of going rigid! ;-)

You mean of course, after you have to do EVERY thing else, super low tech, in manual!!
WHO would even WANT to do that?!
Yea, I know, the Dinosaurs. ;-)

At similar prices all the major brands will make equally excellent shots. As has been said by others feel is the most important factor. Weight, control placement, shutter feel, balance with the lens of your choice are all thing to consider. Compare specs from model to model. Good sources of info and reviews by users are available at B&H and Adorama. Both are on line and offer excellent reputations as well as service. Both have top flight techs available to answer questions. Hope this helps. Most of all have fun.

And if your serious about capturing great images don't spend so much on gear that you don't have the resources left for a good, hands-on workshop or course on the intangibles -- composition, understanding light, etc.

A Canon, a Nikon and a Sony walk into a bar. The bartender asks, "What is this, a joke??"

Okay, sorry, I couldn't resist. I shoot Canon and have a vast assortment of cameras and lenses. I couldn't afford to change if I wanted to.

It's not a question of which camera to buy, but a question of which SYSTEM to buy. Once you select either Nikon or Canon, you'll have so much invested you'll probably never change. And more important than the camera is the glass. While Sony may have some impressive new cameras and lenses, you won't get the incredible selections of lenses that you get with either Nikon or Canon.

Myself? I prefer Nikon. I've been shooting with Nikon cameras and lenses since I was in high school. I think their glass is the best in the world, and I love their cameras.

Does a Chevrolet get you from place to place any better than a Buick? Or a Ford? Or a Toyota?

The differences between makers are minor. Don't get caught up in brand hype.

Find a camera that fits your hand and your budget, and start having fun!

It's like my brothers corvette -- he thinks that is the #1 car ever made.... to me it's useless, I can't put a car seat in it, and it won't pull my horse trailer. Cameras are the same way. Try to figure out your needs and likes and then come back and ask.

The skill you have or the skill your are willing to develop is 99% more important than what camera you purchase. Like a guitar, it's played best by someone with skill.

I purchased Pentax first the K-R and now the K-3. The reason, it had a couple of old lens that had the Pentax Mount. i don't use them much now, but they still provide great pictures. I really like the fact that I can use old Pentax lenses with the KA mount and get great pictures because the Pentax does all of the lens stabilization in the body of the camera and not the lens. Therefore the Pentax lenses even the new ones generally cost less than other lenses of comparable value. (Not always, but most of the time.) Pentax now has a Full Frame Digital camera as well.

My brother shoots with a Nikon D7100 and D7200. He loves his gear and likes how those cameras work. In my opinion, both the K-3 and the D7200 match out very close.

The Pentax systems are not as popular as the Nikon or Canon due to how Pentax was late to the digital party and their distribution philosophy. Now that they are owned by Ricoh, they seem to be growing and innovating much faster. Still they have a long way to go to catch Nikon, Sony, or Canon. But check them out if you aren't afraid of having a limited distribution network. Adorama and B&H both sell the full line. I believe Target sells a limited number of the lower end Pentax DSLRs. By the way, many of the lower end bodies are weather sealed which you won't find on the lower end Nikon and Canon.

I think Winterose might disagree with you on that one.

Winterose? Have you ever seen any of his snaps? There is no camera in this world that would help his "skills" to take a decent shot. LOL.

Geesus. Because of the general nature of your question, no one can provide a definitive answer. Are you interested in point and shoot, mirrorless, full frame or crop sensor?

Jimmy Boy, sure they can...., I'll try!
1st, who digs up all these old useless posts anyway?
2nd, I grew up on Pentax but dumped Pentax when they changed their mount!
Now, let me try and answers the OP's question.

Canon is #ONE!

Nikon is #TWO

Sony is a distant # three!!!!

How did I do?!?!
