It used to work like that in the old days... the looting and pillaging used to be very profitable for everyone, not just the war industries.
Government is largely a leach on the backside of the economy. The services provided are mostly inefficient so you don't get what you pay for. More government--more inefficiency--higher taxes. For a long time, there was no income tax yet we had a military and other services. We just didn't let our representatives go wild with the money and start giving it away to other countries who end up hating us.

actually, we spend most of our money on military so that we can control events in the world. We sell it to the people as national defense, but it is really international meddling. We spend almost as much as the rest of the world on armament, yet we are bordered by 2 large oceans and two large allies... Can you not see this insanity? or the absolute fear of Sharia Law cause you to bemoan the current "withered" state of our military?

And the government is the least qualified to run any program for the people. Look what they have done to the health insurance as an example.

So the Interstates freeways are a leech and inefficient. Wish I had known this before my last trip.

yeah... medicare sucks.. wait a minute, the medicare program, a government administered, socialist health plan has been serving our elderly citizens since 1966! Medicare is a vital safety net. It is often all the medical coverage that retired people have.

And do not forget, that from each payday there was a oayroll deduction for Medicare that your employer matched. So you have paid for your coverage. And also know, the from each Social Security payment there is a Medicare deduction. Like Social Security, Medicare is not a government freebie.

You really don't know what you are talking about. The military is only about 5% of the budget.Plus with jet aircraft, submarines and missiles the oceans are very small, only about 1 hour wide. What large allies. Mexico can't even handle it's own problems and Canada's military is useless in a large conflict. We spend MOST of our money on entitlements. Know what you are talking about before you shoot your mouth off and follow Ben Franklin's advice abut speaking. Our current military is at a lower strength since before WW2- for which we were totally unprepaired for, and our Navy is at a lower level than before WW1. At this point we nare unable to withstand a major conflict. And our enemies know it I mis-stated the % of millitary spending. It is 15% of discretionary spending. But we are still woefully unprepaired

I agree with the meddling part. But the oceans have shrunk to nothing over the years with the development of missile and aircraft technology. And which 2 "large allies" are you referring to? Neither have teeth and one is close to anarchy. They're non-players and could really not care less about our status.
No, you focused in on the military budget size and fail to see that if you took congress out of the picture the costs would go down. I was involved with a couple of development projects in the military and, even though we strongly advised the powers that be not to buy them, they bought them anyway. One (the B1) because the producer was smart enough to subcontract in a lot of congressional districts. The GAO ran an investigation on the other and when they found that the purchase was a fault of the GAO not listening the investigation was dropped.
Operation Eldorado Canyon (Libya, 1986) was largely a failure due to congressmen getting in on the planning end of it and the wrong munitions were used.
Keep government out of military planning, purchasing and operations (they still need to have an on/off and nuclear/conventional switches controlled by civilians) and you will find they are less expensive than what we're paying for now.
