Just a quick update. Met with the VP of Marketing on Monday to pick up my check. Turns out the bank is the one who sponsored the contest. Marketing guy looked at my other photos and is interested in purchasing digital copies of 2 other photos for their website and brochures. Bubble was burst when he only offered $25 for each photo. Said he usually uses stock photos and pays $10 for those, but preferred local pictures that our community can identify with. Told him I'd sleep on it and get back with him-haven't yet. I'm still having computer problems and just made a quick pit stop at the library to check my email. Don't have photos with me as some requested, other than one of the ones he wants to buy that wasn't submitted in the contest (see below). Not sure if I want to give up exclusive rights for only $25.

Great photo! Still would like to see your 2nd place winner and the others the bank is interested in. Again, however, if any of the photos the bank wants were submitted, they don't have to pay you anything since you already gave them a non-exclusive right to use. So if they are willing to pay you even $25 for each of those, take the money and run. And, as for letting them use this photo that you did not enter in the contest, as long as you are only giving them a non-exclusive right to use it, why not take the $25? You can still sell it to others for whatever amount you want. I sold a photo (attached) with a non-exclusive license to our favorite patio bar/restaurant in Scottsdale for them to use for postcards and a magazine ad, for a $100 gift certificate. Just be sure to watermark it with your name and copyright notice (the "C" inside a circle), which you can do regardless of whether you register it with the US Copyright Office. Just so you know everyone has a common-law copyright on an original work of art regardless of whether it's registered, but let's not go into that discussion again.

Thank you Lou, yours is great as well. My concern was whether I would still be able to sell copies of this or any other photo if I sold it to the bank, so thank you for answering that question. I'd like to thank everyone who provided valuable input to my question. Still debating about posting my photos on this website, because sadly, I know people that have had their work stolen by posting it online. Hesitated to even post the above picture. I had that one with me because I had just printed an 8x10. (It is one of the ones the bank wants to buy.)

You can always downsize it before posting so that it would not be very usable if someone tried to steal it. Looks like UHH automatically downsizes images because the original of the photo I posted was about 1.5mb and the image shown with my post was less than 50kb.
