Thanks everyone...such touching comments that show just how wonderful a group of people we have here at UHH. Now for the story and I am a bit embarrassed on this one. My wife took this shot from our car the week before Father's Day. It's me, I had no idea she took it. We had drove the 680 miles to Missouri and I wanted to see my fathers grave one more time. I'm not sure how well I'll be able to travel in the future. The flowers with flags was a special arrangement my daughter made so I'd have something to place at his grave. I was floored when we got home and I began processing images from our trip. I ran across this image and when I asked my wife about it, she said that she couldn't pass up the moment. She had a camera lying next to her in the car seat, so took advantage of having a camera available. In a way, I'm glad she did. Like all of us, we miss our loved ones and like all of us, we do our best to move on, but we never forget their love. My father served in Korea for 2 years, he died at age 69 from Lung Cancer and I miss him so much. RIP Dad. Again, thank you all for your visits and comments. We photographers have a special connection to life...we capture it's beauty and it's moments (good and bad).
Thanks everyone...such touching comments that show... (show quote)

Beautiful image and underlying story. Thanks for sharing both. While the image itself would have been a wonderful (timed) self portrait, the underlying story makes it so much more powerful.

To be honest when I downloaded the image my first impression was that it was you because I could just about make out the name on the headstone. What a wonderful and moving tribute to your father. I am lucky enough to still have my father around and he will be 80 this year. He served a very short time in Korea and had to return due to the death of his own father. As several have already said so well freedom isn't free and I am so glad you shared this touching moment with us.

Good eye Andrea, I thought some might figure it out. The tombstone says Hugh Clell Frazier, SGT US Army, Korea, born and died dates. This is his military provided bronze plaque. All people who served in the military have the right for a free tombstone in this country. Not many people know that. Also, another clue is that my shirt says "Nashville". Anyway...thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your father as much as you can. Yes, Freedom isn't free so it's important for all of us remember that.
