The Sigma dock will allow the lens to be micro focus adjusted to the body at several focal lengths. Whereas, the Nikon body does not allow for this adjustment - as would be the case with the Tamron. Native optical image quality of these lenses seems to be a toss-up - depending on who you ask - and if they already have one or the other ......

I read two comparisons and the Sigma seems to have the edge. The following is the most comprehensive comparison.

The general consensus seems to be that the Tamron and Sigma "C" are very nearly equal in almost all criteria. The one thing that might be worth considering is that the Sigma is programmable and you can do any updates to the firmware yourself, avoiding the need to send it in to do so. And if you ever decided to move to Canon, you can have the mount change by Sigma for a very reasonable fee without the need to purchase a new lens.

I may agree with this since I have the Sport. I think, because of the prices he mentioned that it's fairly safe to assume he's referring to the "Contemporary" version which would be most closely matched by the Nikon 200-500.

I have the Tamaron on Canon and I like the set up fine. I have seen reviews both ways. The dock with Sigma should be a plus but it depends on whether you want to spend the extra money. I do not believe you would go wrong with either one.

Without question the Sport 150-600 is way qualified to handle whatever you throw at it. I've operated this lens in the most dusty environment possible on dusty roads hanging out my car window. Dust appears on the outside and inside of car and no problems as of yet. Yes, its a bit heavy but rugged as they come. I also have the 1.4 extender I use sometimes. It's a little slow with it on but you can always focus by hand. The huge lens hoods is made of metal and does well. I think I've shot over 4,000 shots with the lens. It even does quite well in low light.

Chuck, I bought a Sigma Sport 150-600 for Birds and wildlife and love it. I bought the sport because of durability and difference in the glass in the lens. You will get many opinions here. If your budget is not for the sport, I would go with the Sigma Contemporary.Good luck in what you decide.

This might help you in your decision process:

Remember, there is no free lunch. A 600mm lens has the same field of view as a 900mm lens on your camera. Do you realize that you will need to spend at least what you are spending on your lens for proper support? Getting a long lens is a significant investment, and it doesn't stop with the glass. Inadequate support will make your images look like they were taken using a soda pop bottle for a lens while riding on a merry-go-round. Well, maybe not that bad, but I think you catch my drift. Something to think about.

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life get an ugly girl to marry you and buy a Nikon 200-500.

Chuck, for your camera body, it's a toss up, however, I've not been happy with Sigma's repair department so I'd go Tamron. I've had the Tamron 150-600 and found it a great lens especially for the money. So no complaints about Tamron but having to pay a $160 to Sigma to fix a 150 macro for the same "IS" problem they had "fixed" two months earlier has soured me on Sigma. I'm sure you'll be happy which ever way you go. Just get out and make good use of the lens. Best, j. Goffe

I did a comparison by renting the Sigma Sport one week and the Nikon the next week. At first before trying either one I was ready to buy the Sigma. But it weighs about 50% more than the Nikon and its not fixed aperture. I decided on the Nikon because it supports a 1.4TC and because of the weight.

I finally ordered the Nikon this Monday, awaiting the brown truck.
