I would like a compact with a 24 by 36mm CCD

You're not dreaming alone. I think next year we will see small compact full frame imaging arrays with interchangeable lenses. I'm not sure it will be CCD but I think I know what you mean.
If there is enough demand, it certainly could be done! Remember the Olympus XA and the Rollei 35? They were both full frame 35mm (24x36mm). No interchangeable lenses, but very compact. Don't stop dreamin'...I won't!
Perhaps the Sony NEX? Mirror-less cameras will offer a plethora of opportunities - but only in time - think planned obsolescence.

Yep, my thoughts exactly! Initially I was excited about the Nex7 and almost ordered one, then it occurred to me, "Can a full frame version be far behind?"
I would be great to be able to use all my great glass on small full frame camera that makes use of the total lens, the way the lens was designed to be used. I put my credit card away and I'm waiting.

I would like a full-frame fixed lens camera no bigger than the Canon SX 40 IS with an F1.2 9mm-1500mm image stabilized lens, the capability of 20 frames per second, and a view finder that does not blank out when the shutter is open.
For around $1000 would be good

Growler, you and I are of one mind. I forgot to add a battery that fires 10,000 times before needing to be recharged.

The mirror-less cameras are interesting. I sure have gotten used to a viewfinder, plus the camera is held more stably without arms extended and while it is pressed to the brow. I rarely compose an image through the 3" screen.

Seriously, though, someday the mirror-less cameras may make our SLRs obsolete. It is a dream to think of aiming a 500-1,000mm lens that weighs a third or a fourth it used to.

I suppose if we got back to the old tripod mount on every shot I could get used to no viewfinder. God knows the Grand Masters of photography could do it with those 8x10s and larger.

View cameras are mirrorless, but they do have a ground glass to frame with.
But they are anything but compact.
OK guys and gals, let us go back in time to CA in the 50s and find the Barrus Garage where cars were customized.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Barris_(auto_customizer)
In that dream Barrus cut the front off of my TZ3 with it Leica 10X lens and welded it onto an interchangeable lens body, his choice of best fit. Finished by painting Candy Apple Yellow like the new Pentax, Wow and it made a cracking exhaust sound as it took a photo!
The result fit into my pocket and gave excellent quality.... then I awoke in a big bed with Suzanne Pleshette on one side and Bob Newheart on the other.
