The 70-200mm 2.8 lens is a favorite among NFL photographers, be it Canon or Nikon. Some photos from that lens end up in Sports Illustrated Magazine. The Canon 100-400mm lens is excellent too, for wildlife with the 1.4X teleconverter, with little or no degradation. I've seen images from both lenses. Very sharp.

jmizera, This question is a great question for UHH. Yes, I have and use both lenses plus the 1.4X MkIII. I originally had the 70-200 f/2.8 but found it too heavy & bulky and didn't need that speed for the type of photography I do. I returned it and got the f/4 IS version and find it's one of my favorite lenses. I have the 100-400 MkII and love using it for wildlife, with and without the 1.4X MkIII TC. Using the 7D MkII, I find the converter works extremely well as you can see from the attached image taken yesterday of a Burrowing Owl. I've never used the 1.4X TC on the 70-200 lens as I've never had a reason to do so. I find no reason you wouldn't be a happy camper using the TC on the 100-400. Best, J. Goffe

Thanks so much for the reply, and especially the sample image. Beautiful shot by the way. Looks pretty darn sharp to me. It's definitely very helpful to hear real life experiences, especially from those who have used all of the gear being compared as you have. I think the 100-400L is the next on the purchase list. I'd still like to have a 70-200 F4. It would be great for when I don't need the length.

I have the 70-200 f4 IS and the 100-400mm ii. My wife uses the 70-200 with a 1.4 extender when we shoot nature stuff. The 280mm always seems short. There is no falloff in IQ on either lens with this extender, although you do lose autofocus on some cameras with the 100-400mm plus extender. On a 7D Mark II only the center point AF works. The 100-400 is extraordinarily sharp, and it focuses so fast at first I used to think it wasn't focusing. At 400mm with this extender the max aperture is f8. That has to be a consideration because you have to be in pretty bright light to make that work for moving creatures.

For outdoor shots I think you'd miss the extra 120mm the 100-400 provides.

I have a Canon 70-200 2.8L IS ll USM with lens case and lens hood with some warranty left on it. Like new used 4 or five times. Too heavy for a 70 year old.
