I'll bet there has not been a brass body made in 50 years so how can they "brass"?!
Or are you referring to the old dinosaur cameras???

SS. I still have the Canon FTb bought used years ago for my daughter using in college, it looks like brass after some paint came off the edge. You know about Canon more than I. Is it really made from brass?

I've aways liked the black camera bodies but over time the edges tend to wear leading to "brassing". Most chrome body cameras do not have this issue. What are your preference and why for selecting one over the other? I know that at one time the pro's primarily use black and many non-pro's wanted to look the part.

I don't know if "brassing" will happen over time, but I think that Canon has mitigated this problem by not using metal lugs and metal clips on straps. My Canon F-1 which I used for 30+ years has sidnifigant brassing. Plus it also has any number of scratches and dings on the base. (but the fd glass is still perfect).

The camera makers knew that pros and those who wanted to look like pros liked them better, so they could charge more for them.

Yes, it's been said many times: BLACK BODIES MATTER.

Some straps have a steel cord inside to prevent that.

When the brass shows thru it shows that you actually USE the camera. Makes you look more professional. Chrome makes you look like a sissy.

Back in the '70's, I had my Miranda G (aka: the poor man's Nikon F) black chromed.
Really nice finish and probably more durable than paint.

The term "brassing" actually has nothing to do with brass. Rather it is the term used to describe the bright rub marks on the silvery cameras. Don't ask me where it originated or why, but it is a convenient universal short hand way to describe those bright rub marks

Yes, unlike aluminum film SLR cameras it is hard to photograph dinosaurs with new cameras, the black polycarbonate scares them off.

I've never really cared. My Canon FX and New F1 were chrome. My Nikkormat and Nikon FTns were chrome. My FM was chrome. My F3s were black. My D100 and D70 were black. My Canon 20D, 30D, 40D, and 50D were black. My LUMIX GH4 kit is black...

Tourists have been warned in some places in Italy, not to stand relaxed with their camera gear close to the curb of the road. Motorcyclists drive up close to the curb with a passenger sitting behind and they scoop up your gear pack. Gone.

That's not a dinosaur; it's a classic. Some cameras are actually more valuable if they have an appropriate amount of brassing in the right areas; in particular, some Leica I's and II's are less valuable in pristine condition because collectors are wary of refurbished goods.

you are correct in your post. heavily used and worn black leicas command a premium price due to their original condition. there are a lot of "repaints" out there. some very good and some not so good. my m4 is a black body, worn, and it is less noticable which i appreciate for the work i do with it. i've taped over all the leica engraving to make it even less noticeable. the f2 titanium i have, paired with the noct nikkor is, of course, black and nice and dull. meanwhile, i really like the chrome leicas and the chrome lenses - much nicer than my black finished ones!
