A couple from Nebraska on vacation, visiting a Disney Resort in Orange County Florida, had their child snatched by at least a 7 foot alligator, while the child was near the shoreline. The father dove in the water to rescue his son, but was unsuccessful in the struggle with the alligator. Orange County Sheriff has jurisdiction of the area. This happened in the late evening.

Law enforcement in Orange County Florida said today, there is little hope the todler is still alive. Alligators will be captured to determine the one responsible. If captured?

Yes, a very sad situation. Why did the parents let their child play in the water at 8:30 in the evening? There were signs posted. The alligator - or an alligator - was shot.

It is a very sad and tragic situation. I feel for the parents as I am sure they are kicking themselves for being so stupid. Yes, I am aware that is a bit callous, however, that child should not have been in the water in a posted "No Swimming/ Wildlife Area" at 8:30-9:00 in the evening. He should have been tucked safely into bed. Pay attention visitors. Know the dangers of visiting an area before you go. This is Florida; there are gators in the lakes, bullsharks in the rivers, black bears and wild pigs in the forests, and now pythons in the Everglades. I just can't imagine letting a dog near the lakes, let alone, a small child. Sorry.

They found the child's body. It was said the family was easing in the lake. How horrible.

It is so horrible that this happened. I lived in South Florida for 21 years and hunted gators at one time. One thing we knew was never walk a child or a small dog near the edge of a pond, they become natural food for gators. I lived in a fairly large subdivision of homes within a mile of the everglades with man made ponds all over the area and on the golf course. This was a locked in area where the water did not flow out of the subdivision but we still occasionally got gators in our ponds so we never swam in them. Gators move around and they are pretty stealth about doing it. We knew this because we lived there but the family that lost that child were from the mid-west with no knowledge about gators. Disney should have had Gator warning signs up along with their no swimming signs.

From one who grew up in Louisiana bayou country:
So very tragic! My deepest sympathy to the family. Found the child's body intact, which would be expected. Gators usually drown their prey and carry it to a burrow under a bank that comes back above water level. They stash their prey in that den and wait for it to begin to rot before eating.

While I tend to agree with your reply, from what I've read this happened pretty quickly. Having a (almost) 4yr old, she has gotten away from me in the blink of eye twice. So not so sure the parents were that stupid. I do research when we go to a place we never been on what I need to worry about. Pretty easy to do with Google and the Net. I find it hard to believe they didn't know the dangers.
Just MHO.

I think the parents are going to be questioning themselves for the rest of their lives. Too much Monday morning quarterbacking here...

Our hearts go out to this family, what a tragic event to endure. Disney will be paying these folks a LOT of money. Of course that in no way can compensate for their loss.
