tele converter advice for D750...thanks

for my D750 I have a Nikor 28-300 zoom. I am thinking about getting a teleconverter to use in taking, for example, pictures of loons and eagles on our lake. Of course, I'd like all the automatic features (focusing, etc.) to continue to work. Obviously, I am attempting to avoid purchasing an expensive longer lens that I wouldn't use that oftern.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Chuck

Teleconverters are not made for all lenses. This is a chart from the Nikon site. Many lenses will also suffer from some image degradation as well.

The Nikon branded TC's won't work-clearance issues with the rear element of the lens. I use a 2x Kenko Teleplus Pro300 with my 18 -300 3.5-5.6Nikor zoom mounted to my D300. These high end Kenkos should meet your needs; come in 1:4; 1:7and 2x; AND they will work with older D
Autofocus lenses that require an in-body focus mechanism. The linkage provides metering and autofocus data. Kenko sells a less expensive line of TC's-do not get these, buy the Pro line!

As mentioned, the Kenko 1.4X will probably work for you. But first you might try cropping with well applied pixel enlargement techniques and/or software. It has worked very well for me with no loss of light.

There are probably more than one third party brand TC that will "work" with that lens.

But you'll be disappointed. Perhaps very disappointed.

First, with even a 1.4x TC at longer focal lengths the maximum aperture will be f/8, and there are only 11 focus points on the D750 that will focus. (With a 2X TC it simply will not AF at all.) That might makes some things, such as birds in flight, more difficult.

But TC's work best only with very high quality lenses. The 28-300mm is a 10:1 zoom range, and has many compromises to make it just barely useful as is. A TC magnifies the problems, and when used with a 10x zoom will likely not provide acceptable results.

You will most likely be better off spending a little more money in order to get a more effective lens. The new Tamron and Sigma 150-600mm lenses would provide vastly better results. If the budget just doesn't go that far you might look at the older lenses from Tamron and Sigma instead. The 50-500mm from Sigma certainly is not up to the newer lenses, but people have been satisfied with using it for years.

Not a good idea to put a teleconverter on a 28-300.

I would not do it. TC's work better with prime lenses. The 28-300 is soft at the max zoom and a TC will accentuate that and you will lose a lot of light. Try cropping to get what you want.

Nikon TC will not work with that lens Off brands may work but will lose 1 stop and AF may not work

Check with Nikon, I believe the only one that will give you auto focus is the 1.4.

I use the Kenko 1.4TC on that lens and others - no complaints. I posted comparison pictures when I got it, and some members thought the TC pics looked better.

You have the classic desire/dilemma. You want to photograph birds and your lens isn't long enough to do the job. Good Luck with whatever you choose to do.

Generally speaking Nikon TCs are not compatible with lenses that have a shorter focal length than 70mm. So you can use them with a 70-200 but not a 28-300.
Check their compatibility chart. For best performance with a compatible lens use the TC1.4E III. You only lose 1 stop and the image quality should be better tnan with a 1.7 or 2..

Teleconverters are a waste of money, unless you want a degraded image. A longer lens would be better.
