Good morning to all. I am new here to this forum. I just happened upon it one day on my search for a new camera and so far have found it to be very interesting. So on to my question. A little background: I have made the decision to upgrade my Minolta Maxim 5D. It's not that I am particularly unhappy with it but it is only 5MP and has other disadvantages so that newer cameras now run circles around it. I was a huge Minolta loyalist, that is until Konica decided to pull the plug, so now I am faced with a "brand" change. I have narrowed the field to 2 candidates: the Nikon D7200 or the Canon EOS 80D. Pricing is negligible, they are priced within $50 of each other for the camera body with 2 passable (barely) kit lenses memory cards etc. But if anyone has a viable alternative to either of these I am open to suggestions. Full frame is probably going to be out of my range at this time. Remember that I am starting over with regard to glass and probably filters too unless I happen to get lucky on the diameter of the new equipment. So which way.... Nikon or Canon???? :-)

Flip your coin. It is never the equipment but WHO pushes the shutter that counts.

C49, Dennis and others are correct. Sort of the same as Lexas vs. Infinity. More than just feeling which one feels best, try some common function on each like changing ISO or exposure compensation or flash exposure compensation. I use Canon but many of my buddies use Nikon and given identical situations, it's impossible to tell which image was taken with which system. Just have fun. Best, J. Goffe

You will see possibly thousands of replies with some saying to go Canon and others telling you Nikon is best. Both camera systems are excellent and though I am a Nikon user since 1964 with never a problem, I can attest that the Canon camera is just fine as well. I suggest you go to a camera store and handle both cameras to see which one feels best in your hands. As for the kit lenses being barely passable, I have used many a kit lens and have found them to be great lenses that take sharp photos. The major difference I feel is not so much in the glass but in the build. A professional priced lens will be put together a bit better to last longer for use by professionals. I would say that at least 98% of the users on UHH would not be able to differentiate between two photos, side by side, one with a professional lens and the other from a kit lens.

Good luck with your choice,

Dennis

Since you have already picked a brand, that has been abandoned, and you keep your equipment for a long time, I would stick with Nikon or Canon. These are the two brands that will seemingly last the longest. I had a Minolta as my first camera and when I came back to photography, I looked for a Minolta as one of my choices, only to find out they no longer exist. If you want to add to your collection in the future, buy a brand that has the best possibility of being there for you in the future. Just my thoughts.

Which ever you like best. I went the Nikon route in 1971, Christmas to be exact. Due the lenses and accessories I acquired between then and 2010, my choice for a high end digital was Nikon. I've never wished for anything different, in the 35mm format. Though I do own a Leica, since 1951, I still tended toward Nikon due, again, to the large number of accessories I have for Nikon. Ultimately, the choice will be yours and your alone to make.

I just recharged battery to my Minolta 5d. Still a remarkable camera. Have Nikon d7200 which is a solidly built camera. I like my Sony a77 ll more. All my Minolta lenses work fine with it.

Just between the Nikon D7200 and Canon 80D, I would choose the D7200 with 18-140 lens. The IQ is very good too.

Dennis has the best advice, go put the camera in your hand an see what feels like it wants to take a picture. I am a Nikon owner, but only because I like to keep all the cameras the same brand. I have a Nikon D5500 with several lenses and I could not be happier with what it lets me do, but I always carry a Nikon L620 in my pocket. That is why I like Nikon. That little 620 gives me just about everything the big camera does and it fits in my pocket and goes everywhere I want go, but don't want to carry a big camera. I suggest you think about making sure you can keep the enjoyment in the art as well as all the fancy technical mumbojumbo. The real magic is in the shot that almost got away. Yes, I also have six other Nikons to use. Tice

just a bit of background before we start talking about camera choices Minolta Bought Konica and then the company became Konica Minolta then the company was bought by Sony. Sony makes some of the most advanced digital cameras that can be had right now and the thing is that a lot of them use your Minolta autofocus lenses. I am not talking about with an adapter. So just for the price of a couple of bodies you'll be up into the high end once again. Do take my word for it go online and research it. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Modern cameras are pretty much neck-n-neck when it comes to what they can do. My preference is for Nikon, but mostly because I like the feel of them when using them, if you know what I mean. A really big benefit of Nikon, for me anyway, is the fact that you can take the latest body and mount almost any lens ever made by Nikon and use it. You have to manually expose and focus, but if you are old enough to have used film, that shouldn't be an issue. Some of Nikon's older lenses are what I call "really good glass" and you can pick them up pretty cheap compared to modern auto focus lenses.
