My grandson is interested in this lens and is soliciting any experiences, good or bad regarding this lens. Without regerring me to any websites for reviews, does anyone have/use this lens, and what are your recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, he has a D810.

Good Morning Wingpilot:

I own both Sigma 50 f1.4 Art and their 35 f1.4 Art lenses. I can say without a doubt that they are both beautifully sharp lenses and worth the money spent. I believe that only the Otus 55 f1.4 rates just slightly better and it sells for $3,990 at B+H Photo where as the Sigma sells for $949. The build quality is first rate.

You will read all kinds of opinions, some valid and some with hidden agendas. I shoot one with my d800, and find it to be an excellent lens eith beautiful bokeh. When compared to my Nikon Holy Trinity, and historic 105 f2 DC, I would rate them equal. My only regret is that I didn't buy the 35 f1.4 instead only because I find the 35mm more useful...

First thing first, I do not own this lens but a good friend of mine does and he is delighted with it. The images and built quality are excellent from what I have seen.
All 50mm lenses are well built and highly corrected and in general they perform very well.
I use a 1974 Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens single coated that I had modified to AI so that I could use it with my modern cameras. This lens is old but its performance satisfies my needs. Only caveat is that I cannot shoot against the sun because being a single coated lens ghosts and internal reflections are a real possibility.
I am posting a couple of the images I have made with it not saying this is what you have to buy because the Sigma is superior optically and more modern than this one with multicoating to improve its performance.

Good Afternoon Camera Papi:

I to own the original Nikon 50 f1.4 and the 50 f1.2 AIS legacy lenses. My background with Nikon dates back to 1971 in my college days. The 50 f1.4 was the starter lens for Nikon F and FTN's at that time. A couple of years ago when I switched to the Sony Nex 7, A7R and now the A7R II, I decided to purchase several of the Nikon legacy lenses that I could not afford as a student. I have not been disappointed. I like the fact that they are not auto focus or auto aperture, it gives me time to think and setup the shot without relying on modern technology. I am not a machine gun shooter.

That having been said, the Sigma 50 f1.4 Art and their 35 f1.4 are both top of the line lenses that almost anyone will appreciate and laud. I am not a paid endorser for Sigma but I give them their due. The company has made great strides in developing and manufacturing some outstanding lenses.

Hasn't kept others from talking to themselves, though!

From everything I hear about the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART and the experience I have with other 4 Sigma lenses I own (including a different ART lens, I'd say he made a very good choice.
