Had to take a shot of this Fly, looks to me to be a variation of Hover fly.

It doesn't appear to have the correct wing vein pattern to be a Hover Fly (Syrphidae).

Any ideas on what it might be?

How do you get such crisp, sharp photos of a fly? Can you give us the shooting data?

Very nice close up. Looks like the elusive "leaf sitter fly." LOL JK

Shot Data:
Canon 50D
f-stop 5.6
exp time 1/320
Iso 800
exp bias -2 step
spot metering

I was hand holding the camera and needed a fast shutter speed so I couldn't use anything of an F stop that would give me a large depth of field close up so I had to move back a little and us F5.6 and then crop to get what I wanted. the lens I use is a Canon 50MM Compact Macro with a Bower 2X converter.

Thanks JK, and after some looking this is a Rhagio Scolopaceus, or what they call a Down-Looking Fly.
