Thanks, Angela. As I mentioned, there's not much of the insides left, except in my memories. There are old hinges, bolts, parts, etc. around the farm that were obviously made by this man, my great-grandfather George H. Hammond, better known in the neighborhood as Pete Hammond (don't ask why--I don't know). When I was little, my uncle Bob still used the forge some, and he'd let me stand on a box and work the big six-foot bellows while he worked the metal. Those were great times, and I have not forgotten them. I have only the stories told about Pete.

Oh my! Does that ever stir up memories. I used to hang out at a neighborhood blacksmith shop when I was a boy too. One time a man was inquiring about putting a horse down and who to get to remove the carcass, so 4 of us boys bought the horse for a dollar. We plowed gardens and rode the old horse around town most of the summer. Finally my dad said we were going on vacation and I had to get the horse out of our barn, so I sold out and got my 25 cent investment back. When we got back the horse had died and the boys (or their parents) had to pay to get it picked up. One of my better investments.

Thanks John!

I can almost hear the hammer on the anvil, can't you? See horses waiting for shoes, all the trappings.
